Experiment was conducted to determine optimum temperature and thermal times required for germination of seven grain legumes commonly grown in Bangladesh. Seven grain legumes viz. lentil, lathyrus, cowpea, chickpea, blackgram, mungbean and soybean were tested against various temperature regimes (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40°C). Temperature influenced markedly on the time to 50% germination, germination velocity, thermal times and final germination. None of the grain legumes germinated well at extreme temperatures (0 and 40°C) but germination was fastened with the increase of temperature from 15oC and maintained faster germination till 30oC. Thermal times required for final germination was recorded 55.650Cd for lentil, 51.75oCd for lathyrus, 53.25oCd for chickpea, 63.60oCd for mungbean, 84.90oCd for blackgram, 99.75oCd for cowpea and 95.05oCd for soybean. Final germination percentage was highest at their corresponding optimum temperature. Final germination of lentil, chickpea and lathyrus peaked at 20 to 25°C, mungbean and soybean at 25°C and blackgram and cowpea at 30°C.

To quantify optimum temperature and to estimate thermal time required for germination of seven grain legumes.

The laboratory experiments were conducted at the Seed Science and Technology Unit of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, Bangladesh during January to April, 2008. The experimental variables comprised of seven grain legumes and seven constant temperatures. Seeds of chickpea, lentil, lathyrus, mungbean, blackgram, cowpea and soybean were subjected to seed germination test in germinators at constant temperatures of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40°C. Relative humidity in the germinators was maintained at 90% and temperatures as mentioned in the treatment with a rage of ± 1°C. Germination test was performed by placing 100 seeds on two layers of moist filter paper in 21 cm X 15.5 cm plastic trays. Plastic trays with seeds were placed randomly in the germinators. The germinators were opened every 24 h to count germinated seeds and to add water if necessary. Germination was considered to have occurred where a radical length of approximately 2 mm had been reached. Each experiment was designed as a complete randomized design with four replications. Germination responses of grain legumes to different temperature regimes were evaluated as time to get 50% germination (T50), germination velocity (GV), and final germination percentage (FGP). Germination was recorded daily until no further germination occurred. The time to get 50% germination (T50) was calculated. Thermal time for germination was calculated following the thermal time model. The model states that the thermal time (degree - days) that passes until a given germination percentile (g) is reached. Thermal time T(g) was calculated as: T(g)=(T-Tb)tg, Where T is the actual suboptimal temperature, Tb is the base temperature, and tg is the actual time (days) to germination of percentile g. Base temperature was estimated by incubating seeds at different low temperatures in a refrigerator and when no germination took place. Similarly, maximum temperature was estimated by gradual increase of temperatures during incubation of seeds in germinator. The collected data were analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique with the help of computer by MSTAT-C program. The treatment means were compared by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of significance.

Based on the results of present study, it may be concluded that when soil temperature is known, the procedure of thermal time could be useful to select the optimum time of sowing of grain legumes. Optimum time of sowing favors early emergence and good stand establishment that would predict a good harvest of grain legumes.
