Morphogenetic Properties of Some Soils from the Social Forestry Project Area of Chandra

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Soil samples were collected on natural horizon basis. Color or color notation is reported according to the Munsell Soil Color Charts (Munsell color company, Inc. 1954). The soils under study are light yellowish brown to strong reddish brown in color from surface to subsurface horizons of the four pedons. Probably the variation of color from the surface to subsurface occur due to the movement and fixation of aluminium and manganese oxides. Reddening is commonly associated with soil forming processes and results from oxidation of iron. It is also observed that clay migration and accumulation have been taken place in the profiles. The pedogenic factors, e.g., time, relief and to a lesser extent the parent material contribute to the profile development in these soils. These factors dominantly act in forming the structure, color, and textural B horizon. In addition, intermittent clay cutans were observed in the Cambic B horizon indicating an incipient development of the argillic characteristics.

Objectives:

To determining the future potentials of the Morphogenetic properties of the present study area of Chandra at Bara-kalampur in the Madhupur tract near Kaliakoir satellite station.

Methodology:

Soil samples were collected from the four representative pedons in the social forestry project area of chandra at Bara-kalampur in the Madhupur tract near the kaliakoir satellite station. Soil samples were collected on natural horizon basis. Color or color notation is reported according to the Munsell Soil Color Charts (Munsell color company, Inc. 1954). The soils under study are light yellowish brown to strong reddish brown in color from surface to subsurface horizons of the four pedons. Probably the variation of color from the surface to subsurface occur due to the movement and fixation of aluminium and manganese oxides. Reddening is commonly associated with soil forming processes and results from oxidation of iron. Three analogous processes are Involved in the color changing processes; (i) brownification (ii) rubification and (iii) ferrugination (Buol et. al. 1978). The degree of reddening caused by rubification is dependent on the length of exposure and on the climate during formation, especially temperature (Birkeland, 1984). The red color of the soil matrix and distinct shine)' oriented clay coatings of the ped surfaces in the Bt horizons are some of the typifying characteristics of the forest soils (Cho and Mermut,1992). Color patterns are related to soil morphological features which may provide important clues on how soil genesis is proceeding in a soil. Color mottling also reflecting localized changes in oxidation and reduction. There was a distinct boundary between the iron depleted reduction zone (white spaces) and iron rich oxidation zone (black spaces) of the studied area.

Morphogenetic properties of the soils indicated that they have developed on homogeneous parent materials (Madhupur clay). It is also observed that clay migration and accumulation have been taken place in the profiles. The pedogenic factors, e.g., time, relief and to a lesser extent the parent material contribute to the profile development in these soils. These factors dominantly act in forming the structure, color, and textural B horizon. In addition, intermittent clay cutans were observed in the Cambic B horizon indicating an incipient development of the argillic characteristics. Soil genesis involves changes in physico-chemical properties of different soil horizons like color, drainage, land type, effective soil depth, cutans, clay contents, and oxides of iron, aluminium, manganese etc. Blocky and prismatic type of structure characterize some subsurface horizons especially those with clay accumulation.
