Induction of Variability Through Gamma Radiation in Gladiolus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at Floriculture Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur to ascertain the appropriate variation caused by gamma radiation in different gladiolus varieties. BARI Gladiolus-3 obtained the maximum number of florets/spike (14.38), longer spike (103.93 cm) and rachis (55.21 cm) whereas BARI Gladiolus-5 obtained the heaviest flower stick (107.95g). The maximum number of florets/spike (14.61), longer spike and rachis (101.31 cm and 52.74 cm, respectively) were produced by 30 gray radiation but 20 gray radiation obtained the heaviest flower stick (98.06g). The variety BARI Gladiolus-5 combined with 30 gray radiation produced the heaviest flower stick (125g). The maximum number of corms/hill (2.0) were produced by the BARI Gladiolus-3 couple with 30 gray radiation which was statistically identical with the variety BARI Gladiolus-4 combined with all doses of radiation except no radiation (control). BARI Gladiolus-5 with 10 gray radiation produced the heaviest (65.83g) and largest (7.62 cm) corm and control of BARI Gladiolus-3 produced the lightest and smallest corm (20.0g and 4.15cm, respectively). The corms those were not irradiated by the gamma rays showed poor performances in all the parameters.

Objectives:

i) To ascertain the appropriate variation caused by gamma radiation.

ii) To study the radio sensitivity of several varieties of gladiolus.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Floriculture Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2013-2014. Three gladiolus varieties (BARI Gladiolus-3, BARI Gladiolus-4 and BARI Gladiolus-5) were considered as one factor and the other factor was gamma radiation with six levels (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 Gray). Medium sized corm of these varieties were irradiated with gamma rays at Institute of Food and Radiation Biology under Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, Savar and planted on November, 2013. The experiment was laid out in RCB factorial design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 1.0 m × 1.20 m and spacing was maintained at 25 cm from row to row and 15 cm from plant to plant. The experimental field was well prepared by adding 10 t cowdung and fertilized @ 200 kg urea, 225 TSP and 190 kg MoP/ha (Woltz, 1976; John et al., 1997a). Cowdung, TSP and MoP were applied as basal and urea was top-dressed in two equal splits at 4 leaf stage and spike initiation stage. The data on growth, flower and corm characters were recorded from ten randomly selected plants from each unit plot. All data were analyzed statistically and the mean differences were adjudged by DMRT accordingly by Gomez and Gomez (1984).

Achievement/Findings:

From the result, it can be said that BARI Gladiolus-5 couple with 30 gray radiation showed better performance regarding flower production and the same varieties with 10 gray radiation produced the heaviest and the largest corm but BARI Gladiolus-3 produced the maximum number of corms/hill. But all three gladiolus varieties with 10 to 30 gray radiation showed better performances. In this experiment no flower colour were changed. For creating the variability of flower colour, the experiment should be done again with higher gamma radiation doses.
