Influence of Different Concentration of Auxin on Propagation of Dahlia

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Poly Vinyl House of Floriculture Field of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during 2013-2014 to study the influence of three auxins namely indole acetic acid (IAA), indole butyric acid (IBA) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) on stem cuttings of dahlia when applied singly or combinedly in different concentrations. It was found that IBA when applied singly at 250 ppm concentration, performed better than other treatments in all the studied characters like rooting percentage, root number, early rooting etc.

Objectives:

To study the influence of three auxins namely indole acetic acid (IAA), indole butyric acid (IBA) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) on stem cuttings of dahlia.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Poly Vinyl House of Floriculture Farm, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the period from 2013-2014. The cut stems of 2.0- 2.5 cm were taken from healthy stocks of dahlia plant of DV-002 grown in polyhouse. The rooting media consists of 50% coco dust and 50% soil which was drenched with 0.15% Bavistin a day prior to planting of cuttings to prevent rotting of cuttings. Three types of auxin viz. Indole Acetic Acid (IAA), Indole Butyric Acid (IBA) and Napthalene Acetic Acid (NAA) was used in this study. Seven different auxin treatments (T₁= 250 ppm IAA, T₂= 250 ppm IBA, T₃= 250 ppm NAA, T₄= IAA + IBA @ 250 ppm each, T₅= IAA + NAA @ 250 ppm each, T₆= IBA + NAA @ 250 ppm each and T₇= IAA + IBA + NAA @ 250 ppm each) along with the control were included in the study. Fifteen cuttings were used for each treatment, replicated thrice. The basal portions of the stem were dipped in auxin solutions for 5 minutes for all treatments and only water was used in the control. After that, they were dried in the air for few minutes and planted immediately in medium at a depth of 0.5-1.0 cm. The experiment was conducted in a naturally controlled polyhouse. Intermittent misting was given with hand sprayer every day. The medium was sprayed with auxins at fortnight intervals. The data pertaining to root characters were recorded and presented in bar graph.

Achievement/Findings:

Cuttings treated with auxins induced rooting very quickly than the untreated cuttings. However, cuttings treated with 250 ppm IBA took minimum time (7 days) for rooting and the control took maximum time (12 days) for rooting.A concentration of 250 ppm IBA (T₂) produced the highest percentage of rooted plants (86.7) followed by 250 ppm of each IBA and NAA (T₆) combindly (83.3) and 250 ppm NAA (T₃) singly (80.0). The lowest percentage of rooting (60) was found in control. T₂ (250 ppm IBA) produced maximum number (8) of roots per cutting and was superior to other treatments . Among the various auxins, IBA significantly produced more roots suggesting its higher potentiality to initiate active roots than other auxins. All auxin concentrations gave higher number of roots per cutting than control. Stem cuttings treated with 250 ppm IBA (T₂) produced longest root (8.5 cm) than other treatments.
