Cultivation of Gerbera Under Protective Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study of protective condition on gerbera was undertaken at Floriculture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2013-2014. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. One month age of tissue cultured BARI Gerbera-2 was included in this study with protective structures (poly tunnel and polyvinyl house) including control (open field). Maximum growth, yield and quality of gerbera flower were recorded in polyvinyl house.

Objectives:

The experiment was conducted to develop a suitable production technique to get quality flower.

Methodology:

The study was undertaken at Floriculture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2013-2014. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. One month age of tissue cultured BARI Gerbera-2 was included in this study with protective structures (poly tunnel and polyvinyl house) including control (open field). Spacing was maintained at 50 cm from row to row and 40 cm from plant to plant. Cowdung, Urea, TSP and MoP at the rate of 10 ton, 215 kg, 250 kg and 120 kg per hectare were applied according to Dufaulot et al., (1990). Five plants were selected at random in each replication for recording data on qualitative and quantitative characters. The recorded data were statistically analyzed and means were separated by DMRT according to Steel and Torrie (1960).

Achievement/Findings:

Flower was earliest (97 days) in the plants grown in polyvinyl house. The plants grown under polyvinyl house attained maximum height (38 cm) against minimum height of 32 cm in the plants grown under open field.The maximum number of leaves and plant spread (23 and 25.0 cm respectively) was recorded in polyvinyl house. The stalk length of flower remarkably increased under polyvinyl house (40.0 cm). The polyvinyl house also produced highest number of flower (25) and exceptionally better quality crop than the other treatments because it retained about + 4⁰C high temperature than the control treatment (open field) during winter. Maximum growth, yield and quality of gerbera flower were recorded in polyvinyl house.
