Salinity Effect on Dry Matter Accumulation in Different Vegetative Parts of Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the salinity effect on dry matter accumulation in vegetative parts of 11 soybean genotypes at harvesting stage. Eleven genotypes viz. AGS 313, G 00209, G 00028, G 00283, PK 416, AGS 399, G 00138, BARl Soybean 5, Shohag, Bangladesh soybean 4 and G 00046 were tested with 0,50 and 100 mM Nacl in pot culture. All the vegetative plant parts were affected by the salinity. Reduction of shoot and total dry weight was lowest in the genotype AGS 313 and it was the highest in genotype G 00046. It was concluded that among 11 genotypes studied AGS 313 was relatively salt tolerant in respect of dry matter accumulation compared to other genotypes studied.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of salinity on dry matter accumulation in vegetative parts of 11 soybean genotypes under saline condition.

Methodology:

The seeds of II soybean (Glycine max L.) genotypes viz., AGS 313, G 00209, G 00028, G 00283, PK 416, AGS 399, G 00138, BARI Soybean 5 (BARI Soy 5), Shohag, Bangladesh Soybean 4 (BD Soy 4), and G 00046 were sown in plastic pots of 24cm X 30cm in size, containing 12 kg air dried soil, inside a vinyl house under natural light at the Environmental Stress Research Site of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Salna, Gazipur, Bangladesh from November 2007 to March 2008. When the 1^st trifoliate appeared, 1000ml of 0, 50 mM and 100 mM Nacl solutions were applied in each pot up to harvest. Salt solutions were prepared artificially by dissolving calculated amount of commercially available Nacl with tap water. Tap water was used as the control (0 mM). The salt solution was applied stepwise with an increment of 25 mM in every alternate day till respective concentrations were attained. Treatment solutions were applied in excess so that the extra solution dripped out through the holes made at the bottom of the pots. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with 4 replications. Plant samples were collected from the pots at maturity. Roots were carefully cleaned with running tap water. The plants were then separated into roots, stem and leaf. These samples were oven- dried to a constant weight at 70°C and the dry weight of the different parts was recorded separately. Data of different salinity treatments were compared with those in control treatment in order to understand the relative growth reduction of the individual plant part.
