Effect of Varieties and Planting Materials on Flower, Corm and Cormel Production of Gladiolus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at Floriculture Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur to find out the suitable planting materials for specific gladiolus variety/line for flower and corm production. Full corm of GL-037 produced the maximum number of plants/hill (2.97) whereas the minimum (1.02) was produced by the full corm of BARI Gladiolus-1. Half corm of all gladiolus varieties except GL-037 produced higher number of plants/hill than full corm of respective varieties. There were no significant variations between full and half corm of all gladiolus varieties/genotypes regarding flower production. Regarding corm production, full corm of GL-037 produced the maximum number of corms/hill (2.90) but there were no significant variations between full and half corm of other four varieties of gladiolus but half corm with other varieties produced more number of corms/hill than full corm with respective varieties.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable planting materials for specific gladiolus variety/line for flower, corm and cormel production.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Floriculture Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2013-2014. Two planting materials – full and half corm in combination with five gladiolus varieties/genotypes viz. BARI Gladiolus-1, BARI Gladiolus-3, BARI Gladiolus-4, BARI Gladiolus-5 and GL-037 were the treatment combinations. The experiment was laid out in RCB factorial design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 1.25 m × 1.50 m. Spacing was maintained at 25 cm from row to row and 15 cm from plant to plant. Healthy and uniform sized full and half cut corm of five Gladiolus varieties/genotypes were planted on December, 2013. All half cut corms were thoroughly dusted with Bavistin. The experimental field was well prepared by adding 10 t cowdung and fertilized @ 200 kg urea, 225 TSP and 190 kg MoP/ha (Woltz, 1976). Cowdung, TSP and MoP were applied as basal and urea was top-dressed in two equal splits at 4 leaf stage and spike initiation stage. The data on growth, flower, corm and cormel characters were recorded from ten randomly selected plants from each unit plot. All data were analyzed statistically and the mean differences were adjudged by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

The maximum number of plants (97.90%) was emerged by BARI Gladiolus-1 and GL-037 followed by BARI Gladiolus-3 (96.53%) and BARI Gladiolus-5 (95.14%). The genotype GL-037 produced the maximum number of plants/hill (2.36) whereas other varieties produced statistically similar plants/hill. BARI Gladiolus-3 produced the higher number of florets/spike, longer spike (83.80 cm) and the heaviest stick (51.33 g). On the other hand, BARI Gladiolus-4 produced the tallest plant (67.92 cm). Full corm of GL-037 produced the maximum number of plants/hill (2.97) whereas the minimum (1.02) was produced by the full corm of BARI Gladiolus-1. Half corm of all gladiolus varieties/genotypes except GL-037 produced higher number of plants/hill than full corm of respective varieties. Corms/hill showed significant variations among the treatment combinations . Full corm of GL-037 produced the maximum number of corms/hill (2.90).
