Influence of Corm Size and Growth Regulators on Flowering of Gladiolus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of corm size and different levels of growth regulators on flowering of gladiolus at the Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during the period from November 2013 to May 2014. Different concentrations of GA₃ showed significant effect on the days to 50% spike initiation, spike length, rachis length, number of florets per spike, flower yield and vase life. All concentration of GA₃ significantly improved the characteristics of gladiolus over control, while the most effective concentration was 200 ppm GA₃. Large size corms were found to show better performance than small size corm in respect of all parameters. However, the treatment combination of GA₃ at 200 ppm and large size corm showed best performance in respect of flower production of gladiolus.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum corm size and growth regulator level for quality flower production of gladiolus.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Floriculture field of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur from November, 2013 to May 2014. The experimental land was prepared with deep ploughing. Manure and fertilizers were applied @ 10 ton, 200 kg, 225 kg and 190 kg per hectare of cowdung, Urea, TSP and MoP, respectively. Cowdung, TSP and MoP were applied as basal and urea was top-dressed in two equal splits at 4 leaf stage and spike initiation stage. BARI Galdiolus-5 was used as plant material. The unit plot size was 2.0 m x 1.5 m. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. The experiment was considered as two factors. Factor A: Corm size (i) C1-15 g (small corm), (ii) C2-30 g (medium corm) and (iii) C3-50 g (large corm) and Factor B: different doses of growth regulators: G1 = GA₃100 ppm, G2 = GA₃150 ppm, G3 = GA₃ 200 ppm, G4 = 50 ppm BA, G5 = 100 ppm BA, G6 = 150 ppm BA and G7 = Control. Management practices like irrigation, weeding, mulching etc. were same for all treatments during entire period of study. The spikes were cut when lower 2-3 florets showed their blushes of colour. Corms and cormels were lifted three months after cutting flower and treated with Bavistin (0.2%) for 30 minutes to prevent incidence of leaf blight disease. Data were recorded on numbers of days to 50% spike initiation, spike length (cm), rachis length (cm), number of florets per spike, vase life (days), flower yield etc. The collected data were analysed statistically by performing analysis of variance (Steel et al., 1997) and means were separated using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of significance (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
