A field experiment was conducted at Bangabandhu Agricultural University, Gazipur, during winter, 1997-1998 to evaluate the effects of population density and source-sink manipulation on the productivity of rapeseed Var. Barisarisha-8, The levels of population density were: 40, 60, 80 and 100 plants m-2 and the source- sink manipulation treatments were no removal (R0), removal of lower leaves (RLL), removal of lower primary branches (RPB) and removal of the top of the inflorescence (RIT). The population density showed no significant interaction with source-sink manipulation treatments. Population density exerted significant effects on total dry matter (TDM) production and its partitioning. The TDM production increased with the increase in population density but its partitioning into the reproductive sink was the highest at 60 plants m-2. The higher population densities accumulated more dry matter in leaves and stems. The number of siliquae per plant, number of seeds per siliqua and 1000-seed weight decreased with the increase in population density. The population density of 60 plants m-2 gave the highest seed yield (2283 kg ha-1) and the harvest index (HI) of 0.45. The leaf removal reduced the TDM production by 18.3% and branch removal by 19.8% but the TDM production was increased by 15.6% due to the removal of the top of the inflorescence. The removal of lower leaves reduced the seed yield by 27.5% and branch removal by 12%. The removal of the top of the inflorescence gave the highest seed yield (2411 kg ha-1, 17% higher than the control) and HI (0.50).

To investigate the effect of population density and source-sink manipulation on the productivity of rapeseed.

The experiment was conducted at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, during winter, 1997-1998. The soil was silty clay loam with pH 6.7 under Salna series of Madhupur Red soil Tract. The experiment consisted with four levels of population density viz. 40, 60, 80 and 100 plants m-2 and four treatments of source-sink manipulation as follows:

Ro = No removal (control), RLL = Removal of lower leaves, RPB= Removal of primary branches and RIT= Removal of the top of the inflorescence. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. The unit plot size was 6mx1.5m. Population density treatments were placed in the main plots and source- sink manipulation treatments in the sub-plots. Fertilizers N, P, K, Sand Zn were applied @ 120, 80,60,40 and 4 kg ha-1 in the form of urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate respectively. Half of urea and full doses of other fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation. The remaining half of the urea was topdressed during flower initiation stage. Seeds of rapeseed Var. Barisarisha-8 were sown in lines on 22 October 1997. After emergence the crop was thinned to maintain the desired population densities mentioned above. Weeding, irrigation, mulching and plant protection measures were taken whenever needed. The source-sink manipulation treatments were imposed at seed filling stage i.e. at 55 days after emergence (DAE). To record total dry matter (TDM) production and its partitioning to the plant parts the crop was harvested at early maturity stage (80 DAE) from an area of 1 m-2 per plot. Dry matter of the samples was taken after drying at 70°c for 72 hours in an oven. Seed yield was recorded from an area of 4 m-2 avoiding border. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded on a 10-plant sample basis. Data on different parameters were subjected to analysis of variance and the treatment means were compared by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test.

From this experiment it can be concluded that for the higher productivity of rapeseed plant may be obtained from the optimum population density 60 plants m-2. And the productivity may also be increased by removing the top of the inflorescence after a desirable number of siliquae per plant.
