Development of Farmers' Alternative Cropping Pattern to Suit in Both Water Stress and Excess Rainfall Conditions in Tista Floodplain of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at tire Farming Systems Research site, Paglapir, Rangpur district to develop a farmers' alternative (FA) cropping pattern: Jute (Olitorius, O)-T. Aman-(Modern Variety, MV)-Potato (MV), as against the farmers (F) existing cropping pattern: B. Aus (Local variety, L)-T. Aman (L)-Potato (L). The FA pattern was an attempt to assess the suitability at water stress in March-April and the heavy rainfall during July-August in the Tista floodplain. The farmers' pattern was characterized by low yielding varieties and traditional cultivation practices, resulting in lower yield and income. With FA cropping pattern, the yield of T. Aman and potato increased by 106% and 125%, respectively. Jute in the FA pattern yielded 3.31 t/ha of fibre instead of 1.52 t/ha of B. Aus in the F pattern. The gross margin of the FA pattern was 128% higher than the F pattern and thus indicated its superiority. This was the resultant effect of higher yield of modern T. Aman variety and replacement of B. Aus by jute.

Objectives:

1. To validate a farmers alternative (FA) cropping pattern : Jute (O)-T. Aman (MV)-Potato (MV), in place of existing cropping pattern (F): Jute (O)-T. Aman (L)-Potato (L).

2. To assess crop yield and thereby income of the farmers.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during 1987-88 and 1988--89 at the Farming Systems Research (FSR) site of the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute at Paglapir under Rangpur district. The farmers' alternative cropping pattern (FA) chosen was Jute (0)- T. Aman (MV)-Potato (MV) by replacing the existing cropping pattern (F): B. Aus (L)-T. Aman (L)-Potato (L). For jute in the FA pattern the olitorius variety Falguni Tossa (0-9897) was chosen which can be sown earlier than B. Aus. The T. Aman variety, BR 11, and Cardinal variety of potato was used in the FA pattern. The FA pattern was replicated in five dispersed locations. The practices of existing farmers' pattern (F) were also monitored in farmers' fields to compare F and FA patterns.

Achievement/Findings:

Under the existing conditions of rainfall and moisture in the Tista floodplain, the alternative cropping pattern proved to be superior. Adoption of the alternative cropping pattern could be beneficial in increasing yield and income over the existing farmers cropping pattern.
