Effect of Bulb Size and Boron on Growth and Flowering of Tuberose

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Floriculture Research Field, HRC, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur from March 2013 to January 2014. The experiment consisted of two factors such as Factor A: bulb size (3 levels): small (1.0-1.5 cm) - S₁, medium (>1.5-2.0 cm) - S₂ and large (>2.0-2.5 cm) - S₃ and Factor B: boron (four levels) B₀: Control, B₁: 1.0 kg/ha, B₂: 2.0 kg/ha and B₃: 3.0 kg/ha. The results of the experiment showed that the bulb size and boron had significant effect on most of the parameters in tuberose. Maximum flower yield (540000 spikes/ha) was produced from the large sized bulbs. All doses of boron significantly improved the yield contributing characters of tuberose over control, while the most effective dose was 2.0 kg/ha boron. However, the treatment combination of large size bulb with the application of 2.0 kg/ha boron contributed the best performance in respect of vegetative growth and flowering in tuberose.

Objectives:

To study the effect of bulb size and boron on growth and flowering of tuberose.

Methodology:

The study was undertaken at Floriculture Field of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2013-2014 to study the effect of bulb size and boron on growth and flowering of tuberose. Double tuberose cultivar used as planting material.The experiment consisted of two factors, which were as follows: Factor A = Bulb Size; _S1: Small bulb (1.0-1.5 cm in diameter), S₂: Medium bulb (>1.5 to 2.0 cm in diameter), S₃: Large bulb (>2.0 to 2.5 cm in diameter) and Factor B = Boron Fertilizer; B₀: Control, B₁ : 1.0 kg/ha, B₂ : 2.0 kg/ha, B₃ : 3.0 kg/ha.The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Cultural operations such as weeding, irrigation, disease and pest management etc. were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded on different parameters like plant height, number of leaves, days to spike initiation, spike length, rachis length, number of floret, weight of single spike, spike number, flower yield etc. The recorded data were statistically analyzed and treatment means were separated by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

From the results, it can be concluded that large sized bulb with 2.0kg/ha boron gave maximum growth and flowering of tuberose.
