Requirement of Zinc and Boron Fertilizer for Potato-maize-t. Aman Rice Cropping Pattern

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment on potato in Potato-Maize-T. Aman cropping pattern was carried out in Tista Meander Floodplain soil of AEZ 3 at On-Farm Research Station, Bogra during 2013-14. The objectives were to estimate the requirement of zinc and boron on the yield of Potato-Maize-T. Aman in the pattern and to find out the optimum dose of both the elements for yield maximization. The first crop was potato (Cardinal). Four levels each of zinc (0, 2, 3 and 4 kg ha^-1) and boron (0, 1, 1.5, and 2 kg ha^-1) along with a blanket dose of N₁₇₀P₅₀K₁₃₅S₂₀Mg₁₀ kg ha^-1 & cow dung 5 t ha^-1 arranging in a randomized complete block design were employed in this study. Results showed that the combination of Zn_3.0B_1.5 kg ha^-1 produced higher yield as well as quality grade tubers for potato in the study area of Bogra (AEZ 3).

Objectives:

To estimate the requirement of zinc and boron on the yield of Potato-Maize-T. aman in the pattern, and
To find out the optimum dose of both the elements for yield maximization.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the Tista Meander Floodplain soil at on-farm research station, Bogra (AEZ 3) during the rabi season of 2013-14. There were 4 treatment combinations (T₁ = Zn₀B₀, T₂ = Zn₂B₁, T₃ = Zn₃B_1.5 and T₄ = Zn₄B₂) for potato comprising 4 levels each of zinc (0, 2, 3 and 4 kg ha^-1) and boron (0, 1, 1.5, 2.0, kg ha^-1). Blanket doses of N₁₇₀ P₅₀ K₁₃₅ S₂₀ Mg₁₀ kg ha^-1 & cow dung 5 t ha^-1 were used. The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications of each treatment. The unit plot size was 8m x 6m. The tested variety for potato was cardinal. All fertilizers and cowdung were applied at the time of final land preparation. Zinc and boron were applied as zinc sulphate and boric acid, respectively. Seeds were sown in lines maintaining a spacing of 60 cm x 25 cm and using a seed rate of 1500 kg ha^-1 on 25 November 2013. Intercultural operations and plant protection measures were done to keep the plant healthy. Potato was harvested 26 February 2014 at its maturity. Plant height, foliage coverage (at 60 DAT and 70 DAT), number of tubers per plant and yield at three different grades (< 28 mm, 28-55 mm and > 55 mm) were measured. Prior to experimentation composite sample of the top soil (0-15 cm depth) was analyzed in the laboratory of Soil Science Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). A description of the chemical properties of soils of the experimental plots is presented. Data was analyzed using CropStat7.2.3 Package.

The optimum treatment combinations appeared to be Zn₃B_1.5 kg ha^-1 along with a blanket dose of N₁₇₀P₅₀K₁₃₅S₂₀Mg₁₀ kg ha^-1 & cow dung 5 t ha^-1 to get potato higher tubers yield and quality in Tista Meander Floodplain soil of AEZ 3.
