An experiment was conducted to study the effects of green grasses on morbidity and mortality rate of Black Bengal goats under quarantine farm from September 2013 to February 2014. Eight villeges of Sirajganj Sador upazila under Sirajganj district of Bangladesh was considered for study. Goats were supplied 3 categories of feeds viz., adlibitum green grasses with varieties of leaves, low amount of green grasses with varieties of leaves and very low amount of green grasses in sometimes with varieties of leaves. After 16 days only sound goats were recorded of sick and death goats mainly on the basis of clinical symptom shown by animals and some by laboratory diagnosis and correlation between green grass and morbidity and mortality rate of goats under QF was observed. Morbidity (14.1%) and mortality (7.8%) was the highest at those QF which were supplied of very low amount of green grasses in sometimes with varieties of leaves among those QF which were supplied of ad libitum green grasses with varieties of leaves (morbidity 3.1% and mortality 1.6%) and low amount of green grasses with varieties of leaves (morbidity 9.4% and mortality 3.1%).

To study the effects of green grasses on morbidity and mortality rate of Black Bengal goats under quarantine farm 

Location of study: The study area was 8 villages such as Mohonpur, Char Soydabad, Bonbaria, Satiantoli, Morgram, Khokshabari, Kholishakura and Vatpiari of Sirajganj Sador upazila under Sirajganj district in Bangladesh.  Experimental animals: Total 192 Black Bengal female goats of 12 QF near about same age (12 to 15 months), body weight (10 to 12 kg) and body color (black) were selected for the study. This 12 QF were divided into 3 (4×3=12) categories on the basis of feeding status. Each QF contained 16 goats and each category contained 64 goats under 4 QF. The research work was carried out from September 2013 to February 2014. Experimental animals: Total 192 Black Bengal female goats of 12 QF near about same age (12 to 15 months), body weight (10 to 12 kg) and body color (black) were selected for the study. This 12 QF were divided into 3 (4×3=12) categories on the basis of feeding status. Each QF contained 16 goats and each category contained 64 goats under 4 QF. The research work was carried out from September 2013 to February 2014. Soundness examination: Before installed in QF, each goat was examined by Veterinary an and only healthy, sound and near about same aged and live weighted of goats were selected for the study. Housing management: Goats were housed in a permanent wooden or bamboo floor house and kept under semi-intensive rearing system. Jute sack and rice straw or both were used as bedding when environmental temperature low (mainly during November to February) for all goats. They were allowed to graze in the pasture land at day time. Feeding management: Goats of QF were supplied 3 categories feeds. From 12 quarantine farm, 64 goats of the 4 farm were supplied of adlibitum green grasses with varieties of leaves, other 64 goats of 4 farm were supplied of low amount of green grasses with varieties of leaves and the rest 64 goats of 4 farm were supplied of very low amount of green grasses in some times with varieties of leaves. Goats were allowed to graze in pasture land at day time and supplied of low amount of concent rates in sometimes. Fresh drinking water was also supplied to all the goats. Herd health care: Goats were vaccinated against PPR after administration with anthelmintics in quarantine farm. Control measures against diarrhoea, pneumonia and ecthyma were undertaken with appropriate drugs/measures. Regular vigilance was performed to ensure feeding, herd health care, proper breeding, cleanliness of the farm. Data recording: All Goats were reared for 16 days under quarantine farm. In this period the number of sick and death goats was measured daily on the basis of observed clinical signs and some by laboratory examinations. After 16 days total numbers of sick, death and distributed goats with morbidity and mortality were measured from each QF. Statistical analysis: Data were analyzed by using Chi-square test of fixed factor contingency table and student’s t-test.

Results indicate that morbidity (14. 1%) and mortality rate (7.8%) was the highest at those QF which were supplied of very low amount of green grasses in some times with varieties of leaves among those QF which were supplied of adlibitum green grasses with varieties of leaves (morbidity 3.1% & mortality 1.6%) and low amount of green grasses with varieties of leaves (morbidity 9.4% & mortality 3.1%). It may be concluded that the effects of green grasses on morbidity and mortality rate of Black Bengal goats under quarantine farm used for further research. Work is also needed to reduce the morbidity and mortality of goats by better management, adequate supply of nutrients and preventive intervention
