A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during November 2010 to April 2011 to study the effect of different levels of nitrogen and transplanting depth on the growth and yield of BRRI dhan50. The experiment consists of 4 different levels of N and 3 levels of transplanting depth. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replications. Both nitrogen levels and transplanting depth had significant effects on most of the growth and yield contributing characters of BRRI dhan50. Longest plant (82.33 cm) found from the combination of 136 kg N ha-1 and transplanting at 3.0 cm depth, shortest (64.60) was observed from the treatment combination of 0 kg N ha-1 and transplanting at 1.5 cm depth. Maximum number of effective tillers hill-1 (14.00) was recorded from the treatment combination of 136 kg N ha-1 and transplanting at 4.5 cm depth, minimum number (8.50) was found from 0 kg N ha-1 and transplanting at 1.5 cm depth. The highest grain yield (6.41 t ha-1) was recorded from the treatment combination of 115 kg N ha-1 and transplanting at 3.0 cm depth, lowest yield (3.24 t ha-1) from 0 kg N ha-1 and transplanting at 1.5 cm depth.  So, Applications of 115 kg N ha-1 at transplanting depth 3.0 cm provided the maximum yields of BRRI dhan50.

To study the effect of different levels of nitrogen and transplanting depth on the growth and yield of BRRI dhan50

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from November 2010 to April 2011. The experiment comprised as two factors. Factor A: Nitrogen level (4 levels): 0 kg N ha-1 (control) = N0, 92 kg N ha-1 = N1, 115 kg N ha-1 = N2, 136 kg N ha-1 = N3. Factor B: Transplanting depth (3 levels): Transplanting at 1.5 cm depth from soil level= D1 , Transplanting at 3.0 cm depth from soil level= D2, Transplanting at 4.5 cm depth from soil level=D3. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with 3 replications. Nitrogen was assigned to main plots and transplanting depth to sub-plots. The layout of the experiment was prepared for distributing the level of Nitrogen. Seeds were collected from Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Joydevpur, Gazipur. The land was puddled well with country plough followed by cleaning and leveled with ladder. Pre-germinated seeds were sown in the wet nursery bed on 09 November 2010, respectively to get 32 days old seedlings. The experimental area was fertilized with 100, 120, 120, 100 and 10 kg/ha urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and borax respectively were applied. The one third amounts of urea and entire amount of TSP, MP, Gypsum, Zinc sulphate and borax were applied during the final preparation of land. Rest urea was applied in two equal installments at tillering and panicle initiation stage. Seedlings of 32 days old were transplanted on the well puddled experimental plots on 10 January 2011 in the main field at the rate of 2-3 seedlings hill-1 with 20 × 15 cm spacing. Planting depth was maintained by measuring scale as per treatments. The harvested crop of each plot was bundled separately, properly tagged and brought to threshing floor. The grains were cleaned and finally the weight was adjusted to a moisture content of 14%. The straw was sun dried and the yields of grain and straw plot-1 were recorded and converted to t ha-1. The data obtained for different characters were statistically analyzed to observe the significant difference among the treatment by using the MSTAT-C computer package program. The mean values of all the characters were calculated and analysis of variance was performed. The significance of the difference among the treatments means was estimated by the Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of probability.
