Evaluation of Wheat Genotypes for Resistance to Leaf Rust Under Inoculated Condition.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Forty wheat genotypes consisted of advanced lines and check varieties were evaluated against leaf rust under inoculated condition. Modified Cobb scale was used to assess disease severity. The tested varieties and lines showed different levels of resistance and susceptibility to the disease. Among the varieties and lines tested, 26 lines were graded as resistant, 7 moderately resistant, 4 moderately susceptible and the rest 3 as susceptible.

Objectives:

To evaluate the response of the advanced wheat genotypes against leaf rust under inoculated condition.

Methodology:

A total of 40 entries including susceptible and resistant checks were grown in 1m long 2 row-plots with 20 cm spacing between rows and 30 cm between entries. The experiment was conducted in WRC, Dinajpur. Planting was done on 22nd December. Susceptible variety Morocco was planted in two rows after each pair of test lines and the nursery was surrounded by spreader rows. Recommended agronomic practices were followed for normal crop growth. Test entries and spreader rows were inoculated by spraying with aqueous suspension of urediospores at booting stage of the crop. Disease assessment was done twice between early and soft dough stages following modified Cobb scale (Stubbs et al. 1986) representing severity and infection types. Lines were graded into resistance category (Singh et al. 2009) based on final disease severity.

Forty wheat genotypes consisted of advanced lines and check varieties were evaluated against leaf rust under inoculated condition. Severity of leaf rust varied greatly among different lines and varieties tested under inoculated condition. The disease severity ranged from 0 to 100 S (on Morocco). Among the varieties and lines tested, 26 lines were graded as resistant, 7 moderately resistant, 4 moderately susceptible and the rest 3 as susceptible.
