Yield Performance of Exotic / Local Soybean Genotypes Under Salinity Stress

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to study the effects of salinity on yield performance of some exotic and local soybean genotypes at harvesting stage. Eleven genotypes viz. AGS 313, G 00209, G 00028, G 00283, PK 416, AGS 399, G 00138, BARl soybean 5, Shohag, Bangladesh soybean 4 and G 00046 were tested with 0, 50 and 100 mM NaCI in pot culture. Higher salinity delayed flowering in all the 11 soybean genotypes, though lower level of salinity enhanced flowering in some genotypes as compared to control. However, salinity shortened the days to maturity of the genotypes. All the yield components were affected by salinity. Grain yield was reduced by salinity in all the genotypes studied and decreasing rate was increased with the increasing level of salinity. Among 11 soybean genotypes, AGS 313 showed best performance and Bangladesh soybean 4 showed worst performances in respect of grain yield under saline condition.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effects of salinity on yield and yield contributing characters of 11 exotic/local soybean genotypes under saline condition.

Methodology:

The seeds of 11 soybean (Glycine max L.) genotypes viz. AGS 313, G 00209, G 00028, G 00283, PK 416, AGS 399, G 00138, BARI soybean 5, Shohag, Bangladesh soybean 4 and G 00046 were sown in plastic pots of 24cm X 30cm in size, containing 12 kg air dried soil, inside a vinylhouse under natural light at the Environmental Stress Research Site of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur, Bangladesh from November 2007 to March 2008. Exotic genotypes AGS 313, G 00209, G00028, G 00283, PK 416, AGS 399, G 00138 and G 00046 were collected from AVRDC, Taiwan and BARI soybeanS, Shohag, Bangladesh Soybean 4 were collected from Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Bangladesh. When the 1^st trifoliate appeared, 1000 ml of 0, 50 mM and 100 mM NaCI solutions were applied in each pot up to harvest. Salt solutions were prepared artificially by dissolving calculated amount of commercially available NaCI with tap water. Tap water was used as the control (0 mM). The salt solution was applied stepwise with an increment of 25 mM in every alternate day till respective concentrations were attained. Treatment solutions were applied in excess so that the extra solution dripped out through the holes made at the bottom of the pots. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with 4 replications. Data on days to flowering, days to maturity, pods plant^-1, seeds pod^-1, 100-seed weight and grain yield were recorded. The recorded data were statistically analyzed with the help of MSTAT-C program and the difference between the treatment means were compared by LSD test.
