Dry Matter Production and Crop Growth Rate of Lentil as Influenced by Irrigation Management

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to study dry matter production and crop growth rate of lentil as influenced by irrigation management. The experiment was laid out by split plot design and comprised of six irrigation levels viz. control irrigation, irrigation at pre-sowing, irrigation at post sowing, irrigation at vegetative stage (25-30 DAS), irrigation at pre-flowering (45-50 DAS) and irrigation at post-flowering (70 DAS) and four varieties of lentil viz. BARI masur-3, BARImasur-4, BARImasur-5 and BARImasur-6. The study on growth parameters like TDM and CGR showed increases with the advancement of plant ages. The highest TDM was found from irrigation at pre-flowering stage (45-50 DAS) and BARImasur-6 and lowest value was found from control irrigation and BARI masur-3. The highest CGR was produced by the interaction of irrigation at pre flowering stage (45-50 DAS) and BARImasur-6 and lowest was obtained from BARImasur-3 at control irrigation. The interaction of I₄V₄ performed highest TDM and CGR.

Objectives:

1. To determine the optimum irrigation level for better growth of lentil,
2. To identify the suitable variety for maximum dry matter production, and
3. To know the crop growth rate of lentil as affected by irrigation management.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Agronomy and Agricultural Extension field laboratory, Department of Agronomy and Agricultural Extension, University of Rajshahi,Rajshahi to study dry matter production and crop growth rate of lentil as influenced by irrigation management. The experiment comprised of six irrigation levels viz. control irrigation, irrigation at pre-sowing, irrigation at post sowing, irrigation at vegetative stage (25-30 DAS), irrigation at pre-flowering (45-50 DAS) and irrigation at post-flowering (70 DAS) and four varieties of lentil viz. BARImasur-3, BARImasur-4, BARI masur-5 and BARImasur-6. The experiment was laid out following split-plot design assigning the irrigation levels in the main plot and varieties to the sub-plots. The treatments were replicated three times. The experimental land was opened with a power tiller and subsequently 3 to 4 ploughing and cross ploughing with country plough followed by laddering was done to achieve a good tilth. Urea, Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and MoP fertilizer were applied to the plots at the rate of 45, 85 and 35 kgha^-1at the time of final land preparation. All fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation and were thoroughly mixed to the soil. The seeds were sown on 10 November, 2010 at 25 cm apart. After sowing the seeds were covered with soil and slightly pressed by hands. The plots were irrigated as per experimental specifications. Drainage facilities were provided in the plot. Total dry matter production was determined by adding the weight of stem, leaf, root (when appeared) and then converted into gm^-2. Ratio of dry matter production per unit of time per unit of ground area was calculated with the following formula: Crop growth rate (CGR) = (W₂-W₁)/(t₂-t₁) Where, W₁ and W₂ are the total dry weights of formal harvest and later harvest respectively. And t₂ – t₁ is the time interval between later and formal harvest. The data recorded were compiled and tabulated for statistical analysis. The data were analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance technique and the mean differences among the treatments were adjudged by new Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) with the help of MSTAT software.

Achievement/Findings:

Irrigated of all the varieties with irrigation at pre-flowering stage (45-50 DAS) appeared as the best rate of irrigation in respect of total dry matter production and crop growth rate. From this study, it may be concluded that BARImasur-6 produced the highest total dry matter and crop growth rate when the crop was irrigated at pre-flowering stage (45-50 DAS).
