Study on Growth and Yield of Three Promising Strawberry Cultivars in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at Horticulture Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from October, 2011 to March 2012 to evaluate the performance of strawberry cultivars. The experiment consisted three strawberry cultivars viz., Festival (V₁); RABI-03 (V₂) and Camarosa (V₃) following Complete Randomized Design with five replications. V₁provided the tallest plant (30.3 cm), maximum number of fruit (29.9), maximum weight of individual fruit (14.3 g), longest fruit (30.1 cm), maximum fruit diameter (19.3 mm), maximum fruit yield/plant (434.0 g) and maximum brix (12.6%) while the minimum was observed from V₂.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of strawberry cultivars

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at Horticulture Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from October, 2011 to March 2012 to study the performance of strawberry cultivar. Three strawberry cultivar viz., Festival (V₁), RABI-03 (V₂) and Camarosa (V₃) were used on the experiment followed by Completely Randomized Design with five replications. NPK were applied during the final soil preparation at the rate of N-120 kg/ha (i.e., 0.5g/pot), P-60 kg/ha (i.e., 0.25g/pot), K-40 kg/ha (i.e., 20g/pot). The whole amount of P and K were applied during final pot preparation. Urea was applied in 3 equal installments 30, 45 and 60 days after transplanting. Data were collected on number of runner, number of stolon, plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, days to first flower bud initiation, days to first flowering, days to first fruit setting, days to first fruit harvesting, number of fruit/plant, weight of individual fruit, length of fruit, fruit diameter, yield/plant and brix percentage. Leaf area was measured by using CL-202 Leaf Area Meter (Non destructive method), fruit diameter were measured using Digital Caliper -515 (DC-515). Brix percentages were measured by Portable Refractometer (ERMA, Tokyo, Japan). Collected data were analyzed statistically using MSTAT-C Computer Package Program and the significance of the difference among the treatment means was estimated by the Least Significance Difference (LSD) Test at 5% level of significance.
