Response of Hybrid Rice to Different Levels of Nitrogen and Phosphorus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during November, 2010 to May 2011. The experiment was laid out on split plot design with three replications having nitrogen six nitrogen fertilizer levels viz., 0, 80, 120, 160, 200 kg N ha^-1, USG @ 75 kg N ha^-1 in the main plot and four phosphorus fertilizer levels viz., 0, 30, 50 and 70 kg P₂O₅ ha^-1 in the sub plot. The effect of N and P showed significant variation in respect of yield contributing characters and yield. Maximum effective tillers hill^-1 (13.63), filled grains panicle^-1 (154.67), 1000 grain weight (29.35 g), grain yield ( 9.42 t ha^-1), straw yield (13.33 t ha^-1) was obtained from the application of USG. About 10% more grain yield was measured from urea super granules than prilled urea. Phosphorus at 50 kg P₂O₅ gave the highest grain yield (7.85 t ha^-1). Interaction effect showed that application of urea super granules with 50 kg P₂O₅ ha^-1 gave the highest (9.83 t ha^-1) grain yield and hand application of 160 kg N ha^-1 and 120 kg N ha^-1prilled urea with 50 kg P₂O₅ ha^-1 gave grain yield as 8.83 t ha^-1 and 7.67 t ha^-1, respectively.

Objectives:

To study the response of hybrid rice to different levels of nitrogen and phosphorus.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, under the agro-ecological zone of Modhupur. The farm belongs to the Shallow Red Brown Terrace Soils under Tejgaon Series. The soil was silty-loam. The soil was low in organic matter and nitrogen content. The experiment was laid out on split plot design with three replications having nitrogen fertilizer in the main plot and phosphorus fertilizer in the sub plot. There were 24 treatment combinations. The total numbers of unit plots were 72. There were six nitrogen fertilizer levels viz., N₀=0 kg N ha^-1, N₁=80 kg N ha^-1, N₂=USG (75 kg N ha^-1), N₃=120 kg N ha^-1, N₄=160 kg N ha^-1, N₅=200 kg N ha^-1 and four phosphorus fertilizer levels viz., P₀=0 kg P₂O₅ ha^-1, P₁=30 kg P₂O₅ ha^-1, P₂=50 kg P₂O₅ ha^-1 and P₃=70 kg P₂O₅ ha^-1. A basal dose of fertilizer with potash (K), zinc (Zn) and sulpher (S) at 120, 10, 70 kg ha^-1 in the form of muriate of potash (MOP), zinc sulphate and gypsum, respectively was given during final land preparation. TSP was given as basal following treatment variables. One USG weighing 2.7 g each were placed at 10 cm soil depth at 10 DAT in the center of four hills in alternate rows @ 75 kg N ha-1. Prilled urea (PU) was given following treatment levels. Split application of PU was done at 10, 35 and 55 DAT. Hybrid rice Heera1 was used in the experiment. Thirty days old seedling was transplanted one in each hill maintaining the spacing with 25 cm ×15 cm on the well puddle plots on 27 December, 2010. Intercultural operations were done when necessary. Maturity of crop was determined when 90% of the grains become golden yellow in color. Three square meters at centre of each plot was harvested, dried, threshed and adjusted 12% moisture content to estimate the grain yield. The yield contributing characters viz. number of effective tillers hill^-1, number of grains panicle^-1and 1000-grain weight were recorded from plant samples. The data were analyzed statistically using the IRRISTAT (Version 4.0, IRRI, Philippines) computer package program developed by IRRI. The mean differences among the treatments were compared by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of significance.

Application of urea super granules along with 50 kg P₂O₅ ha^-1 gave the highest grain yield and about 10% more grain yield was obtained from urea super granules than prilled urea.
