The study was conducted at the Citrus Research Station, Jaintipur, Sylhet. Five jackfruit lines were selected for the study. A wide variability was observed in different parameters such as weight of fruit, number of fruits/tree, size of fruit, shape of fruit, number of bulbs in a fruit, percent edible portion and percent TSS among the germplasm studied. AH Jai-078 was noted superior with the highest number of fruits (180) per plant followed by AH Jai-005 (155). Among the accessions fruits of AH Jai-078 was harvested in early March which is considerably early in the fruiting season. The highest edible portion was found in AH Jai-095 (50.94%) whereas the lowest edible portion was noticed from AH Jai-005 (32.49%). Maximum TSS (23.17%) was recorded in AH Jai-005 as against minimum was recorded in AH Jai-095 (18.33%).

To find out a suitable line(s) for the development of a variety (s).

The experiment was carried out at the Citrus Research Station, Jaintiapur, Sylhet during 2013-14 with five superior lines from the previous years study. It was started in the year 1996 with 150 germplasm of Jackfruit. From the evaluation of the previous years, five lines were selected for further trial. The age of trees were around thirty years having approximately uniform growth and size under same management practices. The trees were fertilized twice a year before and after rainy season. As the plants are mentioned around 30 years, each plants was fertilized with 100 kg well decomposed cow dung, 2 kg urea, 1.5 kg TSP, 1 kg MoP, 500 g gypsum, 100 g zinc sulphate and 50 g borax respectively. Irrigation was done at 15 days interval from last week of February to middle of April for the retention of flower. Carbendazim (Bavistin @ 2g/L) was applied to the plants were at the onset of rainy the season in March to protect the fruit from fruit rot diseases. Some plants were infected by gummosis in the rainy season. Bordeaux paste was applied for curing those trees. Data were taken on first flowering date, first harvest date, number of fruits/plant, fruit shape, skin color and different fruit quality parameters and statistically analyzed.

The number of fruits per plant was recorded the highest in AH Jai-078 (180) and the lowest in AH Jai-047 (48). The line AH Jai-078 flowered the earliest (October) among the lines tested while AH Jai-001 and AH Jai-005 flowered in December but AH Jai-047 and AH Jai-095 in January. Among the accessions, AH Jai-078 was harvested on early March which is considerably early in the fruiting season whereas other germplasm matured at regular fruiting season.). The heaviest fruit was obtained from AH Jai-047 (10.33 kg) while the lightest from AH Jai-005 (5.77 kg). AH Jai-047 produced larger size fruit (40.67×26.67 cm) while AH Jai-078 produced the smaller one (26.33×21.33 m).Dense spine (96.0 per 5sq. cm) was observed from the fruit produced by AH Jai-005 compared to sparse spine (61.67 per 5sq. cm) was noted in AH Jai-001. AH Jai-047 was noticed superior with highest number (208.3) of bulb/fruit but its bulb was smaller in size (7.07×3.07 cm) while lowest number of bulb/fruit was obtained from AH Jai-078 with large sized bulb (8.07×6.13 cm).  The highest TSS (23.17%) was obtained from AH Jai-005 while the lowest TSS (18.33%) was noted in AH Jai-095. Edible portion was recorded the highest in AH Jai-095 (50.94%) compared to the lowest in AH Jai-005 (32.49%). Attractive bright yellow coloured pulp was recorded in AH Jai-001, while yellow coloured pulp recorded in AH Jai-005 and AH Jai-078. Other lines exhibited light yellow coloured pulp. The accession AH Jai-078 could be selected as a suitable early variety of Jackfruit.  Although AH Jai-005 yielded the lowest edible portion, its taste was excellent and the size of fruit (4.63 kg) was also suitable for small or single family. Therefore, the line AH Jai-005 may be recommended as mid-season jackfruit variety.
