Performance of Some Popular and BARI Released Mango Varieties Under High Rainfall Area of North Eastern Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Citrus Research Station (CRS), Jaintiapur, Sylhet with 4 popular and 3 BARI released mango varieties. A wide variation was observed in case of growth and fruit characteristics. The highest plant height was observed in Mollika whereas BARI Aam-2 showed maximum base girth, canopy size, dense branching with excellent growth condition. The highest number of fruit/plant was found in BARI Aam 3 (92.00) while it was the lowest in Mohonbhog (13.00). The highest fruit size was obtained from Mollika (13.5×8.43 cm) followed by BARI Aam 2 (9.63×8.37 cm) Maximum TSS (20.50%) was recorded from Gopalbhog. Maximum edible portion was found from Kamala sinduri (75.49%) followed by Gopalbhog (71.94%) while minimum was found from Langra (59.65%). Maximum yield was obtained from Molllika (6.26 t/ha) followed by BARI Aam 3 (4.3 t/ha) although fruit cracking was observed in Mollika variety. But BARI Aam-2 was excepional retaining all the fruits without any cracking although its yield is lower compared to Mollika and BARI Aam-3.

Objectives:

To select the suitable cultivars for north eastern hilly region of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the CRS, BARI, Jaintapur, Sylhet. The soil of Jaintapur is strongly acidic (pH 4.8) with low organic matter content and poor fertility level. Four commercial and three BARI released mango variety, namely BARI Aam-1, BARI Aam-2, BARI Aam-3, Langra, Gopalbhog, Mollika and Kamala sinduri were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. A single tree of each cultivar constituted a replication. Fertilizer @ 30 kg cowdung, 1000 g urea, 500 g TSP, 350 g MoP, 350 g gypsum, 20 g zinc sulphate and 15 g borax were applied per plant in two splits in circular trench (60 cm broad, 30 cm deep) 1 m away from the trunk. First split was applied at the end of September and second at the end of April. Weeding was done twice manually following fertilizer application. Three full cover spray applications with Cymcare 10 EC @ 1 ml/L along with Bavistin 50WP @ 2 g/L were done; first at the flower initiation stage when the panicle is around two inches long; second at the pea stage of fruit and third spray at the marble stage of the fruit. These sprays prevented the fruit from attack of mango fruit weevil. The recorded data on different parameters were statistically analyzed using MSTST-C programme.

Considering all the parameters BARI Aam-2 may be recommended for high rainfall area of north eastern hilly region. But final conclusion can be made after another one year of evaluation.
