Growth and Yield of Boro Rice as Affected by Different Urea Fertilizer Application Methods

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the agronomy field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during boro seasons to find out the influence of variety and different urea fertilizer application method on growth and yield of Boro rice. The experiment was carried out in split-plot design with three replications having three varieties viz. (i) V₁ = ACI Hybrid dhan1, (ii) V₂ = BRRI dhan29 and (iii) V₃ = BRRI hybrid dhan2 in main plot and four urea application methods viz. (i) T₁ = 2.7 g size USG placement at 8 DAT, (ii) T₂ = 1.8 g size USG placement at 8 DAT + Prilled urea plot^-1 (75 g for V₁ and V₃ and 45 g for V₂ ) at 30 DAT, (iii) T₃ =1.8 g size USG placement at 8 DAT + foliar spray plot^-1 (75 g for V₁ and V₃ and 45 g for V₂ ) at 30 DAT and (iv) T₄ = 0.9 g size USG placement at 8 DAT + Prilled urea plot^-1 (37.5 g for V₁ and V₃ and 22.5 g for V₂ ) at 30 DAT + foliar spray plot^-1 (37.5 g for V₁ and V₂ and 22.5 g for V₃) at 50 DAT in sub plot. Result showed that variety and urea fertilizer application method had significant effect on yield and yield contributing characters. BRRI hybrid dhan2 (V₃ ) showed the highest grain yield (4.79 t ha^-1), straw yield (6.80 t ha^-1) and harvest index (41.25%). With different methods of urea application T₁ gave the highest grain yield (4.67 t ha^-1). With the combined effect of different boro rice variety and methods of urea application the highest grain yield (5.41 t ha^-1) was at V₃T₁ . So, V₃T₁(BRRI hybrid dhan2 × 2.7 g size USG placement at 8 DAT) was the best treatment under the present study.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The field was fertilized with P, K, S and Zn in the form of TSP, MoP, Gypsum and ZnSO₄ , at rate of 165 kg ha^-1, 180 kg ha^-1, 90 kg ha^-1 and 15 kg ha^-1 respectively during final land preparation. The N fertilizer was applied in the form of urea as per treatment. As per BRRI recommendation seedbed was prepared and sprouting seeds were sown in the seed bed on November 25, 2008 in order to transplant the seedlings in the main field. The seedlings were uprooted and transplanted in the main field on December 30, 2008 maintaining line to line distance 20 cm and hill to hill distance 20 cm. Intercultural operations were done as when required. Flood irrigation was given to maintain a constant level of standing water up to 6 cm in the early stages to enhance tillering and 10-12 cm in the later stage to discourage late tillering. The field was finally dried out at 15 days before harvesting. The rice plant was harvested when 80-90% of the grains become golden yellow in color. Data were collected on plant height, number of tillers hill^-1, leaf area index, no. of grain panicle,1000-grain weight, grain yield per hectare, straw yield per hectare and harvest index. The collected data were then statistically analyzed following the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique using the MSTAT-C computer package program and the mean treatments differences were compared by least significant difference test at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

The treatment combinations V₃T₁(BRRI hybrid dhan2 × 2.7 g size USG placement at 8 DAT) was the best treatment under the present study.
