Collection and Evaluation of Local Ber Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at the Bio diversity conservation area, Fruit Research Station, BARI, Binodpur, Rajshahi and manda, Naogaon with 42 lines during October, 2013 to March, 2014 to select the superior sour ber varieties for processing purpose for cultivation in the Northern Region of Bangladesh. The line ZM Bin-041 produced the largest fruit (17.00 g) and the line ZM Bin-011 produced the smallest fruit (6.5 g). The stone weight ranged from 0.6-1.2 g. Considering fruit characteristic and yield potentialities ZM Bin-003, ZM Bin-029, and ZM Bin-041 were found superior and may be recommended for cultivation in the Northern Region of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To study the fruit characteristics of existing ber germplasm for the development of improved sour varieties for processing purpose.

Methodology:

The investigations were carried out at the Bio diversity conservation area, Fruit Research Station, BARI, Binodpur, Rajshahi and Manda, Naogaon during the fruiting season from October, 2013- March, 2014. Twenty fruits of each tree were plucked randomly of which ten were used for studying their physical and qualitative characteristics. Data on the different accession lines were recorded on fruit characteristics, stone characteristics, qualitative characteristics and physical characteristics. TSS was measured by refractometer. The qualitative characteristics were determined through organoleptic taste by a panel of expert judge. The collected data were analyzed statistically by Zaman et. al. (1982).

Achievement/Findings:

Considering fruit size, quality and pungency ZM Bin-003, ZM Bin-029 and ZM Bin-041 were found to be suitable among the lines for cultivation of sour ber line in Northern Region of Bangladesh.
