Twenty Second Semi-arid Wheat Yield Trial (22nd Sawyt)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted as title “Semi-Arid Wheat Yield Trial (22^nd SAWYT) consisted of 50 advanced, high yield potential wheat lines provided by CIMMYT, Mexico included local check variety BARI Gom 26 at RWRC, Rajshahi during Rabi 2014-15 for evaluation yield potentiality under stress (drought) condition. The experiment was laid out in Alpha Lattice design with two replications. The genotypes were evaluated for yield, heading, Bipolaris leaf blight tolerance, sterility tolerance, visual grain quality, boldness of grains etc. On the basis grain yield, Bipolaris leaf blight and others yield contribution characters the eight genotype (E-3, E-5, E-18, E-21, E-22, E-32, and E-40) were selected for future research and use

Objectives:

To select superior germplasm/genotypes of wheat with high grain yields under rain-fed condition.

Methodology:

The trial was consisted of 50 entries including the check variety BARI Gom 26. The experiment was sown on 17 November, 2014. The experiment was laid out in Alpha-lattice design with two replications. Fertilizers were applied @ N₁₀₀ P₂₆ K₅₀ S₂₀ B₁ kg/ha with one third of urea applied as top dress at 1^st irrigation during CRI stage. The unit plot size was 5m long with 6 rows spaced at 20 cm. The experiment was conducted under rain-fed timely sown (RTS) condition with only one irrigation for ensuring a good crop establishment. All agronomic practices have been done proper time for better yield performance. Data were recorded on different agronomic characters according to supplied CIMMYT data book. The middle four rows were harvested at 23-27 March, 2015 to get yield data.

Achievement/Findings:

Yield and most of the yield contributing traits were statistically significant except agronomical score of the tested entries. Among 50 entries, about 80% entries showed lower grain yield compared to check variety BARIgom-26. Grain yield ranged from 5375 to 3036 kg ha^-1. Among the tested entries E-40,E-5,E-32,E-47,E-3,E-22,E-23,E-39, and E-34 gave the higher yield (5375 kg ha^-1, 5325 kg ha^-1, 4975 kg ha^-1, 4925 kg ha^-1, 4913 kg ha^-1, 4913 kg ha^-1, 4913 kg ha^-1, 4875 kg ha^-1, and 4850 kg ha^-1respectively) compared to the Check variety BARIgom-26 (4838 kg ha^-1), but these entries are comparably late in heading than check(61 days) variety except the entries E-3 (61 days), and E-5 (60 days), The E-5 was the most earlier in case of days to heading (60 days) but all the selected entries failed to produced higher 1000-grain weight than check variety. The thousand grain weight ranged 44.9 to 26.4g. The highest thousand grain weight (44.9 g) was recorded in case of check variety BARI Gom 26 but the lowest was in 26.4 g in case of E-36. The thousand grain weight of selected eight entries was medium compare to check variety. Considering visual grain quality, yield and others yield contribution traits eight entries (E-3, E-5, E-18, E-21, E-22, E-23, E-32, and E-40) were selected.
