Performance of Two Species of Aroids at Different Light Levels

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two aroids (olkachu and mukhi kachu) were evaluated at different light levels during April to December, 1999 at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University Research farm to know their shade tolerance limit. Plant height of both the crops was higher under the heaviest shade level 125% Photo synthetically active radiation (PAR)]. Partial shade (75% PAR) produced the highest yields for both the crops. Yield and yield contributing characters of olkachu and mukhi kachu did not vary significantly up to 50% reduction of PAR level, though the numerical values of all the parameters were higher at 75% PAR level. Quadratic polynomial relationship was observed for both the crops. where the R² values were high and significant.

Objectives:

To identify the shade tolerance limit of aroids (olkachu and mukhi kachu)

Methodology:

The experiments were carried out in the farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur during April,1999 to December, 1999. The aroid varieties were local (olkachu) and Bilashi (mukhi kachu). The crops were grown under four light levels: 100, 75, 50 and 25% photo synthetically active radiation (PAR). The 100% PAR was the full sunlight. The reduced light levels were created using nylon nets of different pore size and placed 2 m above the ground level. The PAR levels were measured using Sunflect ceptometer. These light levels were maintained throughout the growing season. The experiments were laid out in RCBD with three replications. Unit plot size was 3 m x 4 m and replication to replication distance was 2 m. The crops were fertilized with recommended dose of fertilizers consisting of cow dung, urea, TSP and MP. The recommended doses of cow dung, N, P and K for olkachu were 10 tons, 60, 10, 60 kg/ha. respectively. Those for mukhi kachu were 10 tons, 90, 25, 85 kg/ha. The crops were stared during the first week of April, 1999. Spacing for both the crops was 60 x 45 cm. Intercultural operations and management practices were done properly throughout the growing season. Ten plants from each unit plot were selected for data collection,180 days after planting (DAF) for morphological and at 120 and 240 DAP for yield contributing characters and yields. respectively. Data were analyzed statistically by using IRRISTAT software and the treatment means were compared by DMRT at 5% level of significance.

Plant height of both the crops was higher at the heaviest shade level while yield contributing characters and yield were better at partial shade condition. under full sunIight to moderate shade (50% PAR), the parameters were similar. Olkachu and mukhi kachu could be grown successfully in shades of up to 50% reduction of PAR level without significant yield sacrifice.
