Evaluation of Exotic Mandarin Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four germplasm of exotic mandarin orange were collected and planted at the Citrus Research Station, Jaintapur, Sylhet in July 2008 to study their performance under the agro-ecological condition of Sylhet. The accession CR Jai-007 was found superior in term of plant height, base girth, canopy spreading and number of fruit (47). CR Jai-053 was noted superior with excellent growth condition but it doesn’t bear fruit this year. Fruit quality of CR Jai-007 was good and may be further investigated.

Objectives:

To study performance of exotic mandarin gemplasm under the agro-ecological condition of Sylhet.

Methodology:

All the exotic germplasm were planted at Citrus Research Station, Jaintapur, Sylhet during 2008, with single row plantation under 3x3m spacing. Each plant was fertilized with 20 kg cow dung, 500 g urea, 300 g of TSP and 450 g of MoP twice before and after rainy season. The plants were irrigated at fifteen days interval from mid December to Mid April to reduce water stress. The plants were attacked by leaf minor in July and November. To reduce the infestation Admair (1ml/L) was applied. Boudreaux mixture was applied to remove scab infestation in the trunk and primary branches. Data on plant height, base girth, plant spreading and growth condition of plants and number of fruit/plant were recorded. The date were processed and analyzed by MSTAT-C programme for making interpretation (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

The highest plant height was recorded in CR Jai-007 (320cm) followed by CR Jai-053 (170cm). Base girth and plant spreading were also recorded maximum in the line CR Jai-007. The accessions CR Jai-051, CR Jai-052 and CR Jai-007 fruited this year. The highest number of fruits/plant was recorded in CR Jai-007. The accession CR Jai-053 showed excellent growth condition with dense branching but it doesn’t bear fruit yet. The mean fruit weight of CR Jai-007 was 87.33 g comparatively smaller may be due to first year of fruiting. Fruit size was 5.37×5.4 cm more or less spherical in shape. On an average 10.67 number of segments were obtained from each fruit with 8.4% of total soluble solids. The accession CR Jai-007 fruited for the first time. Final conclusion will be made after complete evaluation on growth and fruit quality evaluation of three years.
