The experiment was carried out at Agricultural Research Station, Rajbari, Dinajpur during 2013-14 and 2014-15 rabi seasons to know the effect of sowing depth on emergence, tillering ability and yield of wheat. The treatments were four sowing depth viz., 2, 4, 6 and 8 cm. The variety was BARI Gom 28 in 2013-14 and BARI Gom 26 in 2014-15. Seeds sowing in 4 cm depth recorded the highest seedling emergence and the lowest in 2 and 8 cm depth. The highest spikes m-2 was recorded in 4 cm depth and the lowest in 2 and 8 cm depth. The highest grain yield was recorded in 4 cm depth in both the years and the lowest in 2 and 8 cm depth.  The straw yield also followed the similar trend.

To determine the best sowing depth on seedling emergence, tillering ability and grain yield.

The experiment was carried out at Agricultural Research Station, Rajbari, Dinajpur during 2013-14 and 2014-15 rabi seasons. The experiment was conducted in randomized completely block design with three replications. The treatments were four sowing depth such as 2, 4, 6 and 8 cm. The unit plot size was consisted of 15 rows each of 4 m long having a row to row distance of 20 cm and block to block distance of 1 m. Wheat variety BARI Gom 28 and BARI Gom 26 were sown in line by hand on November 26 in 2013 and November 30 in 2014, respectively. Seeds were placed continuously in lines as per treatment depth by making specific narrow furrows with iron rod and covered with soil by hand. Fertilizers were applied @ 100-26-35-20-1 kg ha-1 N-P-K-S-B in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. Two-third of urea and total amount of other fertilizers were applied during final land preparation. The rest amount of urea was top dressed at crown root initiation (CRI) stage followed by light irrigation. Weeding, mulching and other intercultural operations were done uniformly in each plot to ensure normal growth of the crop. At 10 DAS, five replicated plants per treatment were used to measure the seminal root number, plant dry weight and root dry weight. The roots were collected from a depth of 0-20 cm and carefully cleaned with water. The plant and root dry weight was measured after the samples were oven dried at 70 ?C for 72 hours. The crop was harvested after four months of sowing when the plants attained full maturity. Ten plants from each plot were sampled randomly for data collection. The crop was cut at the soil surface level. Threshing, cleaning and drying of grain were done separately plot by plot. The weight of grain and straw were recorded plot wise and adjusted at 12% moisture content. Plant height was measured from five places in each plot at different DAS.

1.   Budget:

Seedling emergence started at 5 DAS and increased significantly up to 10 DAS regardless of treatments. At 5 DAS, the highest seedling emergence was recorded in 4 cm depth which was followed by that in 2 cm and 6 cm depth while no seedling was observed in 8 cm depth. Initially the seedling emergence was found delay in 8 cm depth but after a certain times (7 DAS) seedling emergence became higher than 2 cm depth. However, Seeds sowing in 4 cm depth recorded the highest number of seedling emergence throughout the counting period. On the other hand, Seeds sowing in 2 cm depth recorded the lowest number of seedling emergence might be due to low moisture content in upper soil layer. Similarly, seeds sowing in 8 cm depth also recorded the lower seedling emergence might be due to the limitation of coleoptile length in wheat. The number of seminal root, plant dry weight and root dry weight at 10 DAS affected significantly by sowing depth in both the study years. The highest number of seminal root in 2013-14 was obtained in 2 cm depth while in 2014-15 no significant difference was observed. The highest plant dry weight was recorded in 4 cm depth in both the years followed by that in 6 cm depth. The lowest plant dry weight in 2013-14 and in 2014-15 was recorded in 2 cm and 8 cm depth, respectively. But the maximum root dry weight was recorded in 2 cm depth in both years which were statistically at par with 4 cm and 6 cm depth and the lowest in 8 cm depth. But there were no significant difference obtained in spike length, spikelets spike-1 and number of grains spike-1 by sowing depth treatment. The highest number of spikes m-2 was recorded in 4 cm depth followed by that in 6 cm depth and the lowest in 2 cm and 8 cm depth. Similarly, the highest plant height was observed in 4 cm depth and the lowest in 8 cm depth in both the years. The highest 1000-grain weight was obtained in 2 cm and 8 cm depth in 2013-14, while in 2014-15 no significance difference was observed. The highest grain yield 4.51 t ha-1 and 4.48 t ha-1 were recorded in 4 cm depth in 2013-14 and 2014-15, respectively followed by that in 6 cm depth and the lowest in 2 cm and 8 cm depth. The highest grain yield in 4 cm depth might be due to the highest number of spikes m-2 and the lowest in 2 cm and 8 cm depth. The straw yield also followed the similar trend. From two years result, it can be concluded that wheat sowing in 4 cm depth results higher plant stand establishment as well as higher grain yield.
