An on-farm trial was conducted in split-plot design with 4 dispersed replications in Sherpur district (under AEZ 22) during rabi 2014-15 season to see the performance of 4 wheat varieties in the non-irrigated fallow lands of the area. Only irrigation at CRI stage (I1) produced significantly higher grain yield than non-irrigated/rainfed condition (I0). This was attributed by the higher yield contributing characters. Non-irrigated (rainfed) wheat also produced a substantial yield (2,463 kg ha-1). The maximum spikes m-2 (279) was observed in BARI Gom 26 with I1 treatment followed by BARI Gom 27 with I0 treatment, and the minimum spikes m-2 (245) was observed in BARI Gom 25 with I0 treatment followed by BARI Gom 28 with I0 treatment. The highest 1,000-grain weight (TGW) (45.9 g) was recorded in BARI Gom 28 with I1 treatment and the lowest TGW (30.4 g) was recorded in BARI Gom 27 with I0 treatment. The highest grain yield (3,125 kg ha-1) was recorded in BARI Gom 26 with I1 treatment followed by BARI Gom 26 with same treatment and the lowest grain yield (2,331 kg ha-1) was recorded in BARI Gom 27 with I0 treatment followed by BARI Gom 26 with same treatment.

  Supplemental irrigation, Wheat

 i) To introduce wheat in new area of Sherpur district,

ii)  To utilize the fallow land with wheat, and

iii)  To evaluate  the new wheat varieties in drought prone area with one or no irrigation

The experiment consisted of four varieties viz., V1 = BARI Gom 25, V2 = BARI Gom 26, V3 = BARI Gom 27 and V4 = BARI Gom 28, and two irrigation viz., I1 = one irrigation at CRI stage and I0 = no irrigation. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with 4 replications (2 in Jhinaigati and 2 in Nalitabari Upazila). Irrigation were assigned in the main plot and varieties in the sub-plot. The unit plot size was 4×5 m. Liming was done with Dolochun (@ 1 t ha-1 before sowing as the soil is strongly acidic in nature. Fertilizers were applied as WRC recommendation; 100-26-50-20-5-1 kg ha-1 N-P-K-S-Zn-B for irrigated condition. Two-third of N and whole amount of other nutrients were applied as basal and rest of N was top-dressed after irrigation at CRI stage. For rainfed wheat 66-26-50-20-5-1 kg ha-1 N-P-K-S-Zn-B, respectively, was applied and whole amount of all the nutrients were applied as basal. Data were recorded on yield and yield contributing characters. Data was analyzed using MSTAT-C programme and mean separation was done by DMRT.

Significant effect was observed due to irrigation on yield and yield contributing characters of wheat except grains spike-1. The higher grain yield (3,081 kg ha-1) was obtained from I1 (one irrigation at CRI stage) than no irrigation (I0). Higher number of spikes per m2 (264) and 1,000-grain weight (41.8 g) were found in I1 than in I0, and contributed to higher yield in I1. The earlier maturity was recorded in I0 than in I1 treatment. Rainfed (non-irrigated) wheat also produced a substantial grain yield (2,463 kg ha-1) revealed that there was some residual soil moisture. In rainfed condition less amount of N was applied compared to irrigated condition. Varieties had significant effect on yield and yield contributing characters of wheat. The highest grain yield (2,869 kg ha-1) was recorded in BARI Gom 28 followed by BARI Gom 25, and the lowest (2,688 kg ha-1) was recorded in BARI Gom 27. The maximum TGW (44.7 g) was recorded in BARI Gom 28 and the minimum TGW (31.89 g) was recorded in BARI Gom 27. The highest number of grains spike-1 (49.0) was found in BARI Gom 25 and the lowest (40.3) was found in BARI Gom 28. The maximum number of spikes m-2 (271) was observed in BARI Gom 28 and the lowest (251) was found in BARI Gom 26. The highest days to maturity (110) were recorded in BARI Gom 25 followed by BARI Gom 26 and the lowest (108) was recorded in BARI Gom 28.

Combined effect of irrigation and varieties had significant effect on yield and yield contributing characters. The maximum grain yield (3,125 kg ha-1) was recorded in BARI Gom 25 and BARI Gom 28 with I1 treatment followed by BARI Gom 26 with same treatment, and the minimum grain yield (2,331 kg ha-1) was recorded in BARI Gom 27 with I0 treatment followed. The maximum TGW (45.9 g) was recorded in BARI Gom 28 with I1 and the minimum TGW (30.4g) was recorded in BARI Gom 27 with I0 treatment. The maximum grains spike-1 (49.3) was recorded in BARI Gom 25 with I1 followed by same variety with I0 treatment and the lowest grains spike-1 (38.8) was recorded in BARI Gom 28 with I0 treatment. The maximum spikes m-2 (279) was observed in BARI Gom 26 with I1 treatment followed by BARI Gom 27 with I0 treatment and the minimum spikes m-2 (245) was observed in BARI Gom 25 with I0 followed by BARI Gom 28 with same treatment. The highest days to maturity (111) was found in BARI Gom 25 with I1 and the lowest maturity days (107) was found in BARI Gom 28 with I0 treatment. From the results and discussion it is concluded that one irrigation, which was applied at CRI stage, produced higher grain yield of wheat than rainfed condition. BARI Gom 25 and BARI Gom 28 gave the higher grain yields with higher gross return, gross margin as well as higher BCR with one irrigation
