The effect of physicochemical parameters and plankton composition on mono - sex Nile Tilapia production in ponds was investigated in three fish farms for twelve weeks from March to May, 2012. The physic - chemical parameters were found to be respectively, temperature=27.14 - 27.20°C, transparency=22.15 - 24.64cm, dissolved oxygen=6.59 - 6.83mg/l, pH=7.94 - 8.01, free carbondioxide=5.46 - 12.78mg/l , total alkalinity=44.37 - 56.84mg/l, chemical oxygen demand (COD)=25.67 - 42.65mg/l, biological oxygen demand (BOD)=0.76 - 4.86mg/l. The phytoplankton population in three different farms was found to be consisting of 19 genera including 4 dominant families, Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Cyanophyceae, and nine genera of zooplankton under the families of Rotifera and Crustaceaan. Phytoplankton and zooplankton showed inverse relationship between them in growth. Chlorophyceae was dominant all over the experimental period but Bacillariophyceae showed highest rate of feeding by fish during gut analysis. There were no significant variation among the survival of fish in different farm and ranged were limited to 93.34 to 97.13%. This study showed that fish yield was dependable on the quality and management of ponds water characteristics. The highest production found in T2 was 2175.68kg/ha/12 weeks and 80 fish per decimal showed best stocking density for optimum utilization of the natural food.

To identify the best stocking strategy for growth performance of mono - sex Nile Tilapia and maximum utilization of phytoplankt on and zooplankton in extensive culture system.

This study was carried out in a newly developed three fish farm at Trishal area, Mymensingh for a period of twelve weeks from March to May, 2012.Three fish farm, viz., treatment 1 (T1 ), treatment 2 (T2 ), treatment 3 (T3 ) were studied. In each fish farm, three ponds were randomly sampled and result presented in a generalized form. Water samples were taken from each experimental pond at the different sites once a fortnightly for twelve week s at 09:00 - 10:00 hours. Reading of some water parameters were done on the sites while the others were estimated at the laboratory. Mercury in glass thermo - meter (100°C) was keeping into water up to 4cm below from the water surface, allowed to stabilize for 2 minutes and reading were taken in degree Celsius ( °C). A weighted secchi disc of 20cm in diameter, painted in alternative black and white colors was lowered into each pond untilitsjust disappeared and pulled up until it appeared again. The two reading were recorded and an average value was calculated to give secchi disc transparency. PH was fortnightly monitoring by HACH water test kit (model FF - 2) and oxygen concentration was measured by water quality test kit (YSI model 85). Free corbondioxide was measured by standard method. Alkalinity, COD and BOD were calculated using standard methods described by Boyd and APHA. Plankton net (mouth area =40cm2, mesh size=50μ) with a 10 ml bottle attached to the apex was used to collect plankton samples. Plankton species were identified by Jeje and Fernando, while the number of plankton was estimated using the Sedgwick - Rafter counting chamber as described by Boyd. To evaluate the fish growth the following parameters were used: weight gain (g), % of weight gain, survival (%) and production.

In spite of the promising future of tilapia farming in Bangladesh, it took a long time to realize, the fact, due to some negative attitudes of the respective organization decision making for their environmental threats but now its overcome by well managed in mono - culture system. On the basis of socio - economic condition most of the farmers in Bangladesh are dependent on natural food resources for minimize the cost. In extensive culture condition the natural food are plankton, which are directly stimulate to make up most of nutrition for fish growth and excellence recover imbalance pond ecosystem. In this research mainly examine how to improve the production and profit by minimize the excess rate of additional output and understanding the nature of plankton and their maximum utilization by optimum stocking strategy.
