Poly-house on Micro-climatic Manipulation and High Value Crop Production in Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments on Tomato and cucumber were conducted under polyhouse and open field conditions at the field laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from December 2007 to April 2009 to investigate their growth performances and yield potentials. The experiment comprised of a 15 × 4.5 m polyhouse along with equal size adjacent open field where BARI tomato-3 & Ratan and cucumber var. Greenmaster were grown in 2 ×2 m plots with standard spacing and 4 replications. Both air and soil temperatures were always higher inside polyhouse as compared to outside (open field) while PAR and relative humidity (RH) had the opposite trends. Tomato & cucumber grown under polyhouse condition had the superior performances in terms of vine length, number of vines, number of leaves, leaf expansions over the plants grown in the open. Flowering and fruit setting in polyhouse were advanced by about a week both in tomato and cucumber as compared to crops produced in the open field. The first flowering, fruit setting and fruit maturity were also advanced by about 3-7 days in polyhouse compared to their corresponding occurrence in the open plots respectively. Plants grown in the polyhouse had also reproductive superiority in terms of flowers/plant, number of fruits/plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, weight of individual fruit and fruit yield/ha over the open condition. The yield of tomato and cucumber from polyhouse were 80.6 and 17.02 tons/ha whereas that from open field were 57.2 and 4.35 tons/ha respectively during 2007 to 2008 growing season which was late planting in nature for tomato (i.e. from late December 2007 to April 2008). However, during 2008 to 2009 growing season which was early planting in nature (i.e. from November 2008 to April 2009), the yield performances of both Ratan & BARI tomato-3 was more than 3 fold i. e. 127.5 tons/ha as compared to 35.25 tons/ha in the polyhouse and control conditions respectively.
