Evaluation of Lime Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three germplasm of lime (Citrus aurantifolia) were collected from different parts of Bangladesh and planted in the Fruit Research Farm, HRC, BARI, Joydebpur on July 2012. The germplasm were evaluated during July 2013 to June 2014. The highest plant height (114.67 cm) was recorded in CA Joy-001 followed by CA Joy-003 (106.67 cm and the lowest plant height (105.67 cm) was noted in CA Joy-002.The widest north-south and east-west canopy spread were observed in CA Joy-001 (142.00 cm and 157.00 cm) followed by CA Joy-002 (123.33 cm and 132.67 cm, respectively). The narrowest canopy spread north-south and east-west was manifested in CA Joy-003 (103.00 cm and 100.33 cm). Individual fruit weight and number of fruit (71.0 g and 74.33, respectively) were noticed maximum in CA Joy-001. Statistically similar and maximum juice contents were recorded in CA Joy-001 and CA Joy-003 (35% and 33%, respectively). TSS percentage was recorded highest in the germplasm CA Joy-002 (7.0%) and lowest in CA Joy-001 (4.5%). Maximum yield (5.15 kg/plant) was noted in CA Joy-001. The germ plasm CA Joy-002 and CA Joy-003 produced identical plant yields (3.08 and 3.06 kg, respectively).

Objectives:

The experiment was conducted to select superior line(s) to release as variety(ies).

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre (HRC) Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during July 2013 to June 2014. Three germplasm of lime were collected from different areas of the country and planted on July 2012. One year old seedlings were planted in the field at a spacing of 4 x 4 m. Plants were fertilized with the recommended dose of manure and fertilizer (Ullah, et al 2006). All of the accessions were fertilized with 10-12 kg well decomposed cowdung, 100 g urea, 100 g TSP and 100 g MoP on first week of October 2013. Light irrigation was given after fertilization. 50 g Urea, 50 g TSP, 50 g MP and 25 g Furadan per plant was given each time on November, January and March. Three flood irrigations were performed on mid November, January and March. Weeding was performed after 6-8 days of each irrigations. Insecticide (admire) was sprayed twice at 7 days interval on the last week of February for controlling the aphid infestation. Data on base girth, plant height, north south and east-west spreading, growth condition, fruit length, fruit diameter, segment number, rind thickness, number of fruit per plant, seed/fruit, fruit weight, juice content (%), TSS and Yield per plant were recorded on June 2014 and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

The accessions CA Joy-001 gave the highest number of fruit yield without any disease and insect infestation. The experiment will be continued for drawing final conclusion.
