MD. RAZIDAR RAHMAN
Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh

In order to determine the aquaculture activities in Panchagarh Sadar Upazila under Panchagarh District, a questionnaire survey was used in the entire Upazila. For this purpose, data were collected from 30 farmers living near the farm, covering all the unions of the Panchagarh Sadar Upazila under Panchagarh District for a period of five months from December 2013 to April 2014. The present study indicated that agriculture were the main income source for 56.67% farmers. Highest number of farm (46.67%) established within five years before and 66.67% of the farmers have their own pond. Twelve different fish species were found to be cultured in these farms. Fish fry and fingerlings were collected from private nurseries in Chilahati, Domar, Debigonj and Bogra BRAC hatchery. Size of fish seed and fry varied from 2.54-4.57 cm with price of BDT 3000 Tk/ kg fingerlings. Almost all the farmers carried out polyculture system. It was also found that 60-70% farmers used rui, catla, mrigal, bighead and bata with integrated culture. Water retention capacities in the study area were not very high and fish cultured were possible only 7-8 months a year. Average harvested size of fishes varied from 90-150 g and 95.33% of farmers fully depended on contact fishermen for fish harvesting. Average wholesale price of different fish species at arat TK 90-120/kg. The farmers currently facing a number of constraints such as, water retention capacity in pond, lack of quality seed, poor loan facility, lack of capital, marketing and management problems. To improve the overall conditions of fish farmers, it is necessary to upgrade the existing fish farming practices through institutional initiatives.

1. To determine the status and practices of aquaculture activities in Panchagarh Sadar Upazila;
2. To identify the important factors responsible for fish production; and
3. To identify specific socio-economic and technical problems associated with pond production with policy implementation.

Selection of the study area: Selection of the study area is an important step of aquaculture activities study, which depends on the objectives or purpose set for the study. Study area was in the northern part of Bangladesh. Primary information was collected in Panchagarh Sadar Upazila under Panchagarh District. Finally data were collected from 30 farm owners/managers randomly covering the selected study area. Description of the study area: Panchagarh District (Rangpur division) covering area 1404.63 sq km, located in between 26°00´ and 26°38´ north latitudes and in between 88°19´ and 88°49´ east longitudes. It is bounded by west bengal state of India on the north, Dinajpur and Thakurgaon Districts on the south, Nilphamari District on the east, West Bengal state of India on the west. Eleven Indian enclaves are located in this District. These enclaves are Puthimari, Daikhat, Shalbari, Kajladighi, Natak, Toka, Nazirganj under Boda Upazila BehulaDanga, Balapara, Kotbhajani, Dahala Khagrabari under Debiganj Upazila; and Gabati and Singimari under Panchagarh Sadar Upazila. Panchagarh District is located on the northern extremity of Bangladesh. Population Total 836196; male 429490, female 406706; Muslim 690893, Hindu 142350, Buddhist 2194, Christian 42 and others 717. Main water bodies: Karatoya, Atrai, Mahananda, Tangon, Dahuk, Patharaj, Talma, Nagar, Chawai. Administration during the British rule in India Panchagarh was a Thana under Jalpaiguri District of West Bengal. It was included in Dinajpur District at the time of the partition of India in 1947. Panchagarh Sub Division was formed in 1980 comprising Panchagarh, Boda, Debiganj, Atwari and Tentulia Upazilas. The Sub Division was turned into a district in 1984. Main sources of income Agriculture 70.96%, non-agricultural labourer 5.42%, industry 0.47%, commerce 9.6%, transport and communication 3.72%, service 4.83%, construction 0.73%, religious service 0.15%, rent and remittance 0.13% and others 3.99%. Preparation of the survey schedule: According to the objectives of the study, a survey schedule consisting of farm owner or farm manager was prepared to collect the expected data. At first a draft was prepared in accordance with the objectives of the study. Then the schedule was pretested to verify the relevance of the questions and the nature of the sample producers. After pre-testing and necessary adjustment, a final schedule was developed. Selection of sample producers: It was possible to include all the farms under the study because of limitation of time and resources. A responsible size of sample to achieve the objectives of the study was considered. Considering these aspects 30 sample farm ware selected randomly for the study. Period of data collection: For these studies, data were collected intensively by using structured survey schedule in recall method. The collected for period of five months from December 2013 to April 2014. Collection of data: Data were collected by direct interviews. With a set of interview schedule designed for this study, each respondent was given of brief information about the nature and purpose the study during the interview. Besides, the researches asked the questions systematically in a very systematic manner with explanations wherever it was felt necessary and the information were recorded. Processing and analysis of data: After the phase of data collection, the data were summarized, tabulated and analyzed according to the objectives of the study. A tabular method of analysis was followed in analyzing the collected information.
