Effect of Furadan 5g, Neembicidin and Poultry Refuse in Controlling Root-knot Disease of Brinjal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University farm during 2005-06 for the management of root-knot disease of brinjal with nematicides Furadan 5G @ 60 kg/ha, Neembicidin @ 5 ml/L water, and organic soil amendment with poultry refuse @ 10 ton/ha either singly or in different combination. Application of the treatments Neembicidin, poultry refuse and combination of Furadan 5G with poultry refuse reduced root-knot nematodes population, gall index and improved plant growth of brinjal. Among the treatments poultry refuse combined with Furadan 5G gave the best performance. Significantly higher yield (1.5 t/ha) was found under the treatment T₄ (Furadan 5G and poultry refuse) which was statistically similar with the effect of treatment T₇ (Furadan 5G, poultry refuse, Neembicidin) in reducing gall and increasing yield of brinjal over control.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of Furadan 5G, Neembicidin and poultry refuse in controlling root-knot disease of brinjal

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University during the period from December 2005 to April 2006 following Completely Randomized Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Eggplant variety Luffa was used for the experiment. Pre-soil test was done by Bangladeshi plate method to ensure the presence of nematodes in the experimental plot before sowing seedling. Eight treatments, viz. T₁ = Furadan 5G @ 60 kg/ha, T₂= Poultry Refuse @ 10 ton/ha, T₃ = Neembicidin @ 5ml/L water, T₄ = Furadan 5G (T₁) + Poultry refuse(T₂), T₅ = Furadan 5G (T₁) + Neembicidin (T₃), T₆ = Poultry refuse (T₂) + Neembicidin (T₃), T7 = Furadan 5G (T₁) + Poultry refuse (T₂) + Neembicidin (T₃) and T₈ = Control were used in the experiment. The requisite quantities of poultry refuse @ 10 ton/ha, or 2 kg/plot was added to the field and allowed to decompose for two weeks, to avoid phytotoxicity to the brinjal seedling. Neembicidin, a commercial product of ACI, was applied twice to the field soil @ 5 ml/lit. First dose was applied during transplantation of the seedling and second dose was eight week after transplanting of the seedling. Furadan 5G was applied twice during 7 days after transplanting and 75 days after transplantation. After preparation of main field, 21 days old seedling was transplanted in the experimental plots on the 20 th December 2005. At the end of the growing period, the plant were uprooted from the field. Uprooted plants were washed with running tap water to make the roots free from all dirt. Precaution was taken to minimize damage of root systems during uprooting and washing. Data on plant growth characteristics and nematodes development were determined and recorded as shoot length (cm), shoot weight (g), root length (cm), root weight (g), dry root weight (g), number of galls/plant root, gall index (0-10), number of nematode/plant root and yield (t/ha). Gall index of five plants of each treatment was determined on a scale of 0-10, where 0 represented roots free from gall, 1= 10%, 2 = 20%, 3 = 30%, 4 = 40%, 5 = 50%, 6 = 60%, 7= 70%, 8 = 80%, 9= 90% root galling and 10 means having total galling. The diseased plants roots were collected and nematodes were isolated by Bangladeshi plate method. Pear shaped female nematodes were observed under stereoscopic microscope. The data were statistically analyzed using computer package program (MSTATC). Treatment means were compared by DMRT (Duncan's Multiple Range Test). Correlation and Regression study was done to establish relationship between shoot length, root weight with number of gall among the treatments.

Overall performance of the treatments applied in the experiment in controlling root knot disease of brinjal, application of Furadan 5G @ 60 kg/ha in combination with Poultry refuse @ 10 ton/ha could be used to control root knot disease and may be advised to the farmers for profitable production.
