The study was carried out at the experimental farm, of Dept. of Genetics and Plant Breeding, BSRAU, Gazipur during November 2007 to May 2008  to assess genetic variability, mean performance, character association and path coefficient analysis for out crossing traits in maintainer lines of rice. The results indicated that different maintainer lines differed significantly regarding all the characters studied. Minimum differences of genotypic and phenotypic variances and coefficient of variations as well as high heritability coupled with high genetic advance were observed for flag leaf area (cm2), angle of opened floret (º), exerted stigma percentage (%), stigma length (μ), anther length (μ), anther breadth (μ), pollen fertility (%), out crossing rate (%) and grain yield (g) per hill of different maintainer lines. A wide range of variation was observed among the genotypes of the maintainer lines and their out crossing characters including yield. Out of 20 maintainer lines Kalijira 3B, Kalijira 7B, Kalijira 9B, Kalijira 10B, Badshabhog 3B, Badshabhog 10B, Radhunipgal B, Radhunipal 2B, Dubsail B and Doirgura B were identified as a good maintainer lines due to their desirable out crossing traits. Pollen diameter, flag leaf area and out crossing rate of maintainer lines showed a high degree of positive correlation with grain yield (g) per hill. Selection could be made based on pollen diameter, flag leaf area and out crossing rate of maintainer lines of rice.

To assess genetic variability, mean performance, character association and path coefficient analysis for out crossing traits in maintainer lines of rice.

The experiment containing 20 maintainer lines were carried out at the experimental farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur during November 2007 to May 2008. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Two rows of 5 m each constituted the experimental unit. Healthy seedlings of 37 days old were transplanted in separate strips with 20 cm × 15 cm spacing in the experimental field. The land was prepared thoroughly with proper ploughing followed by laddering to attain a good puddled condition. Fertilizers @ 180-100-70-60 kg/ha urea, TSP, MP and gypsum was applied respectively. All fertilizers except urea were applied at the final land preparation. Total amount of urea was applied in three installments at 15 days after transplanting (DAT), 30 DAT and 50 DAT recommended. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data were collected from 10 hills from each genotype. Flag leaf area (cm2), stigma length (μ), exerted stigma (%), angle of opened floret (º), anther length (μ), anther breadth (μ), pollen diameter (μ), pollen fertility (%), out crossing rate (%) and grain yield/hill (g) were recorded. The statistical analysis for various characters under investigation were done and the analysis of variance for each of the characters was performed by F test and mean values were separated by DMRT using MSTATC program. The analysis of variance was done. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variations were computed using by  the formula. Simple correlation coefficient for all the possible pairs of characters at phenotypic and genotypic levels were analyzed. Correlation coefficients were further partitioned into components of direct and indirect effects by path coefficient analysis.

The genetic parameters, correlation and path coefficient analysis of the present study revealed that Kalijira 3B, Kalijira 7B, Kalijira 9B, Kalijira 10B, Badshabhog 3B, Badshabhog 10B, Radhunipagal 1B, Radhunipagal 2B, Dubsail B and Doirgura B were identified as a good maintainer lines due to their desirable out crossing traits. High GCV, PCV, heritability and genetic advance of stigma length, anther breadth, pollen fertility, out crossing rate and grain yield suggested that these characters could be transmitted to the hybrid progeny and phenotypic selection based on these would be effective. Pollen diameter and out crossing rate showed a positive correlation with grain yield (g) per hill for maintainer lines. The path coefficient analysis at genotypic level revealed that pollen diameter, flag leaf area and out crossing rate of different maintainer lines showed the highest positive direct effect on grain yield (g) per hill. Diverged maintainer lines are recommended to use as parent in future hybrid breeding program.
