De Trashing Effect in Controlling Sugarcane Stem Borer and Yield of Sugarcane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted against sugarcane stem borer (Chilo tumidicostalis Hampson) to test the effects of de-trashing and yield of sugarcane during 2008-2009 in grower’s field at Chunarughat under Habigonj district. Results revealed that treatment T₆ - Cartap 4G@3.0 k g ai ha^-1 applied in June, July and August (Standard) showed the highest 86.06% efficacy followed by 68.02% efficacy in T₅ (5 times de- trashing) treatment over control plot. Increased cane yield over control was recorded in treated plot. The highest cane yield (93.47 t ha^-1 ) was recorded in T6 treated plots followed by (85.50 t ha^-1 ) in T₅ treated plots. Brix content of sugarcane was also recorded. The highest brix (22.33%) was recorded in T₅ treated plot.

Objectives:

To evaluate the efficacy of de-trashing on the control of sugarcane stem borer.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Chunarughat (Habigonj) farmer's field under Akhaura Terrace soils during 2008- 2009. The sugarcane variety Isd 16 was used as planting materials. Plantation was done through conventional sett placement (end to end) in trenches in December 2008. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The experiment comprised of seven treatments including control. The treatments were : T₁ – De- trashing one time (June); T₂ - De -trashing two times (June & July); T₃ - De -trashing three times (Jun, July & August ); T₄ – De -trashing four times (Jun, July, August & September; T₅ - De -trashing five times (Jun, July, August, September & October); T₆ - Cartap 4G@3.0 k g ai ha^-1 in June, July & August (Standard); T₀ - Untreated (control). Gap filling was done within one month aged poly bag raised settling. Fertilizers were applied as per recommended dose, method and time. Insecticide Cartap4G (standard) was used @ 3.00 kg ai ha^-1. The application of insecticide was done thrice in June, July & August. Intercultural operations were done as and when required. Stem borer incidence generally starts from May, therefore de-trashing will be started from the month of June and ended to October. Data were taken in June, July, August, September and final in October. Brix reading was taken by hand refractometer from standing cane. The yield of canes per plot was recorded at harvest in December 2009. For efficiency study, percent infestation was computed by counting total and infested canes for individual plot and the percent infestation was computed by using the formula: % Stem borer Infestation = Number of infested canes/Total number of canes x 100.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study shows that both T₅ and T₆ treatments are effective in controlling sugarcane stem borer. But T₅ treated plot was without use of insecticides. So it can be suggested, as it is more eco-friendly. Therefore, in the present experiment, T₅ (5 times de-trashing) treatment was found superior efficacy to other treatments. However, more evaluation is needed for standardization.
