Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh.

A study was made at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh on the efficiency of Methabenzthiazuron (1. 3- dimcthyl-3-2-benzothiazolyl) urea, in 70% W. P.), a selective weedicide (trade name is TribuniI, Bayer) as weed killer in winter wheat crop in the trial area. Doses of weedicides, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 kg. per hectare and no weeding, were compared with locally practiced hand weeding method. It was found that 3.0 kg/ha was the best among the 3 doses of weedicides used, which controlled the weed present in wheat field in highest percentage and significantly increased (32.4%) the yield of grain over no weeding. The mechanical control method by "Nirani" produced significantly increased yield of 48.7% over the control. But the unit cost of production was 3 times higher than that of chemical. The species of weeds killed by the Tribunal were Chenopodium album (Chenopodiaceae), Eleusine Indica (Poaceae), Cyperus rotundus (Cyperaceae), Cynodon dactylon (Poaceae) and other minor species of weeds.

To see the effectiveness of methabenzthiazuron as weedicide for weed control in wheat crop.

The experiment was conducted at the Field of the Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, in the year 1972-73, The experimental land was sandy loam, medium in fertility. The soil pH was 6.6. The weather condition of total experimental period was fair with rainfall of 10.16-cm. and with average-monthly temperature ranging from 25.68° to 21.40Co. The wheat cultivar Larma-Rojo, a maxican wheat was used. The chemical used was Methabanzthiazuron (Tribunil) having the chemical name 1, 3-dimethy 1-3 (2.benzothiozolyl) urea, in 70% W. P. The experimental treatments were (i) No weeding (control), (ii) convensional mechanical control, two time weeding at 25 and :0 days after seeding by Nirani (iii) Methabenzthiazuron 2.5 kg/ha (iv) Methabenzthiazuron @ 3.0 kg/ha, (v) Methabenzthiazuron @ 3.5 kg/ha, all applied at 4 leaf stage, as spray at 59 PPM. The experiments was laid out in randomized-block design with 4 replications. Five treatments were placed at random in unit plot in each replication. The plot size was 50.8 cm X 27.9 cm, The land was ploughed prepared well and Triple super phosphate @ 184.3 kg/ha, Muriate of potash @ 92.15 kg/ha and 1/2 dose of Urea @ 115.2 kg/ha were applied at land preparation and rest 1/2 dose of urea was applied as top dressing 52 days after seeding. The seeds were treated with Granoson "M" @ 28.5 g/37.32 kg of seed 1 day prior to planting. Seeds were sown in lines with a spacing of 25.8 ern between and 11.32 cm. within rows at a depth of 5.08 cm. Methabenzthiazuron was applied at a time in all the plots at different rates as per treatment at noon having bright sunny days. Intensity of weed growth and percentage of different weeds killed were calculated before applying chemicals and before harvest of the crop. All the other intercultural practices were kept constant for all the plots. The plant characters studied were (i) total ear bearing tiller, (ii) total fertile grain per panicle, (iii) total grain yield, (iv) total straw yield, and (v)1000.grain weight. The data were collected from 10 randomly selected plants. Total grain weight, total straw weight and 1000-grain weight were taken after harvest. Data collected were statistically analysed and interpreted by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test.

From the analysis of variance it was observed that Methabenzthiazuron was most effective for controlling weeds in the winter wheat. It showed satisfactory effect of Methabenzthiazuron was satisfactory on total ear bearing tillers, total fertile grains per panicle and 1000 grain weight. The mechanical control of weed (T2) recorded the highest grain yield (3250.52 kg/ha), which was significantly superior at 1% level over-the control (T1) and all the chemical weed control treatments (T3, T4, T5) were also significantly superior over the control treatment (T1) at 1% at level. Mechanical control gave 48.7% increased production of grain over the control where as Methabenzthiazuron at the rate of 3.0 kg/ha gave 32.4 % increased production of grain yield over control.
