Evaluation of Green Manuring with Sesbania Rostrata in Rice Wheat Cropping Pattern

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The direct and residual effect of green manuring with Sesbania rostrata on transplant Aman rice under rice-wheat cropping pattern in a light textured calcareous soil was studied for two years. Beneficial effect of green manuring alone and in combination with fertilizer N on the grain yield and uptake of N. P and K by rice and also toe availability of these nutrients in soil was determined. Green manuring plus 30 kg N/ha compared better than 90 kg N/ha alone. Residual soil fertility due to green manuring increased the yield of succeeding wheat crop. The study suggests that in rice- wheat cropping pattern, dhaincha green manuring to rice would be beneficial not in enhancing its grain yield but also in promoting the yield of succeeding wheat crop.

Objectives:

To Investigate the direct and residual effects of green manuring on the crop yield, nutrient uptake and availability of nutrients in the soil.

Methodology:

Field experiments were conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Regional Station, Rajshahi. The soil of tbe experimental field was Sara series of calcareous Brown Floodplain having pH 7.6, Organic matter 1.38%, CEC 18meq/100g, and 92, 10 and 160mg/kg available N, P and K, respectively. There were eight treatment combinations consisting 4 levels of N (0,30,60 and 90 kg/ha) along with and without green manuring. Only phosphorus as triple super phosphate at the rate of 25kg/ha was applied in green manure treated plots. Seeds of Sesbania rostrata were sown on 1st May, 1991 and 1992. When the crop was at the age of 55 days old, it was ploughed down and allowed 5 days for decomposition. Potassium as muriate of potash, S as Gypsum and Zn as Zinc sulphate was applied at the rates of 35, 20 and 5kg/ha, respectively in the rice crop. Fallow (without green manure) treatments received P at the rate of 25kg/ha as this quantity of phosphate has already been applied for raising green manuring crop. The fertilizer through urea was applied in 3 equal splits: 1/3rd at basal, 1/3rd at active tillering stage and the rest 1/3rd at panicle initiation stage.Thirty day old rice seedlings of BR- 11 were transplanted on July 2, 1991 and 1992, respectively. Necessary plant protection measures were taken as and when necessary. Sample of rice plants were collected at tillering stage and analysed for N, P and K contents. The rice crop was harvested at maturity on November 10, 1991 and 1992. Grain (14% moisture) and straw yield, (oven dried) were recorded. Grain and straw samples were collected and analysed for N,P, and K uptake. After harvest of rice, soil samples were also collected and analysed for N,P and K. After harvesting the rice crop, the same piece of land with same layout was used for the next crop. Wheat (cv. Kanchan) was sown at the rate of 120kg/ha to study the residual effect of green manuring, Basal doses of P and K were applied at the rates of 25 and 35kg/ha. Nitrogen (0,30,60 and 90kg/ha) through urea was applied in 2 equal splits: 1/2 at sowing and the rest 1/2 at first irrigation on December 15, 1991 and 1992, respectively. At maturity, the wheat crop was harvested. Grain and straw yields were recorded and statistically analysed.
