A field experiment was carried out during August 2011 to December 2011 at Sunamganj district of Bangladesh to study the performance of aromatic varieties on the growth and yield of aromatic rice. The experiment consisted of eight varieties viz. BRRI dhan50, Kataribhogh, Rata (local), Kowla (local), Kalizira, Chandramukhi (local), Chinigura and Tulsimala. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed significant variations among the varieties for all the measured characters. The highest grain yield (4.43 t ha -1) was recorded in BRRI dhan50 (Banglamati) followed by Kataribhogh (2.63 t ha-1 ) and Rata (2.50 t ha-1). The lowest grain yield was observed in Kalizira (2.16 t ha-1).

To find out suitable aromatic rice variety for Sylhet region.

The experiment was conducted at Haiderpur village of Chatok, Sunamganj during the period of August to December 2011 to fulfill the objectives of the study. The experimental site belongs to the Eastern Surma-Kushiyara Floodplain (AEZ-20). Before starting the experiment, initially composite soil sample (0 – 15 cm depth) was collected from the experimental plots and analyzed. The soil was silty loam with low organic matter (1.61%) and acidic in nature (pH 5.0). The N (0.1%) and S (12 ppm) content was low and P (3.0 ppm) content was very low. The K (0.20 meq/100 g), Zn (1.35 ppm) and B (0.40 ppm) content was medium. The experiment consisted of eight varieties of aromatic rice viz. BRRI dhan50, Kataribhogh, Rata (local), Kowla (local), Kalizira, Chandramukhi (local), Chinigura and Tulsimala. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The land of the nursery field to raise rice seedlings was opened with power tiller in wet condition and then it was prepared by ploughing and cross-ploughings followed by laddering. The weeds and stubbles were removed and the land was fertilized with farm yard manure @ 3 kg sqm-1. Sprouted seeds were sown in the wet seed bed at 9 July 2011. The land of the experimental plot was puddled by ploughing and cross-ploughings with power tiller followed by laddering and weeds and stubbles were removed after each laddering. A blanket dose of fertilizer (56-25-22-16-3-2 kg N-P-K-S-Zn-B ha-1) was applied on high yield goal basis of rice. Besides, well decomposed cow dung at the rate of 6 t ha-1 was applied before final ploughing. The full amount of phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, zinc and boron were applied during final land preparation in the forms of triple superphosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and boron, respectively. Nitrogen was top dressed in the form of urea in three equal splits: 7 DAT (days after transplanting), 28 DAT and 46 DAT. Thirty four days old 3 to 5 rice seedlings per hill were transplanted at 11 August 2011 maintaining a hill spacing of 25 cm × 20 cm as per treatment and design. Weed was controlled by applying herbicide (Pretilachlor) at 7 DAT and one hand weeding at 28 DAT. A supplementary irrigation was applied during flowering of the crop. Other intercultural operations and plant protection measures were taken as and when required. The data on plant height, number of panicles per hill, panicle length, number of spikelets panicle-1 and 1000-grain weight were measured from ten randomly selected hill of each plot. Grain and straw yields were recorded from total area of each plot.

From the above study, it was observed that variety had significant effect on yield performance of aromatic rice varieties on region basis (climate and soil). Among the tested varieties BRRI dhan50 performed the best which produced 4.43 t ha -1 grain yield. Next to BRRI dhan50, Kataribhogh (2.63 t ha-1) and Rata (2.50 t ha-1) shown better performance regarding yield. Therefore, BRRI dhan50, Kataribhogh and Rata would be the key varieties of aromatic rice to boost up yield in Sylhet region.
