The research work was carried out in the Laboratory of Entomology Division, Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI), Ishurdi, Pabna during May to October 1999. Six different food media viz. rice flour, wheat flour, maize flour, mixture of rice & wheat flour (1: 1), mixture of rice & maize flour (1: 1) and mixture of wheat & maize flour (1: 1) were used to find out a suitable food(s) for the development of rice meal moth, Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton). Average egg laid number found highest (254.25/female) in maize flour but hatching was found highest in wheat flour (88.06%). Longest and shortest larval duration were 39 and 24.75 days when reared on maize flour and wheat flour respectively. The highest (75.5%) and lowest (45%) larval survival rates were found on wheat flour and maize flour respectively. The highest survival rate of pupae followed the same trend 85% and 50% on wheat flour and maize flour respectively. Results revealed that wheat flour could be used as best food for the development of C. cephalonica.

To find out a suitable food(s) for the development of rice meal moth, Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton).

The research work was carried out in the Laboratory of Entomology Division, Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI), Ishurdi, Pabna during May to October 1999. The temperature, relative humidity and photoperiod in the laboratory were maintained at 28 + 1 oC,  60 + 5% and 12L: 12D, respectively during the study period. Food preference study: Six different kinds of food i.e., (1) Rice flour (2) Wheat flour (3) Maize flour (4) Mixture of rice & wheat flour (1:1) (5) Mixture of rice & maize flour (1:1) (6) Mlixture of wheat & maize flour (1: 1) were tested for development of C. cephaionica. Clean and healthy grains of rice, wheat and maize were collected from local market of Ishurdi, Panbna. After sun drying, the grains were crushed separately in the crushing mill, sieved through 0.50mrn mesh sieve, and finally preserved in separate airtight plastic boxes. Similarly, another three boxes filled with the mixture of rice and wheat flour, rice and maize flour, and wheat and maize flour in 1:1 ratio each. The food materials were properly mixed with blender machine and used for experiment as when necessary.  Stock culture of rice meal moth: The eggs of rice meal moth were collected from the laboratory of the Entomology Division, BSRI and were kept in separate plastic  bowls (29.5 cm dia. x 11.5 cm height) with six different test food medium/diet. In each bowl, about 10,000 eggs were spread on 200 g of respective food and 4 bowls were maintained for each food and tag labeling was maintained properly. Then the bowls were transferred into the wooden insect rearing box. Each box was divided carefully into three chambers by a very thick paper. The boxes had glass covers for better observation of the bowls. Each chamber under glass cover was covered with thick and very transparent polythene sheet. Sometimes the glass cover was opened for better aeration and to get humidity easily inside the case which helped the development of larval instars. After 15 days, the bowls were transferred into another insect rearing wooden chamber, which were surrounded by fine mesh net (2 mm) and each box had two chambers. So proper aeration took place and moths were collected easily. The foods were supplied as and when necessary in all the bowls. After emergence, moths were collected by test tubes (10 ml) and were placed into previously marked glass jars (10 cm x 8 cm x I8 cm). Ten pairs of adults were placed in each jars containing an iron net as an oviposition site for the moths. Eggs were collected from these jars by a paper tray and after cleaning, eggs were preserved in petridishes (5 cm dia.) as per food and replicated to study the biology. Development of C. cephalonica: Eggs of C. cephalonica were collected from different food materials of the stock culture. The eggs were placed in separate pertidishes (9 cm dia.) for hatching. The neonates were carefully collected with the help of a soft camel hair brush and were transferred to previously marked petridishes containing with test food materials. Ten larvae were kept in each pertidishes and four petridishes were maintained for each kinds of food. Fresh foods were given to the larvae at every 24 hours interval and uneaten food along with feces were removed. After third instars, the larvae were transferred to larger petridishes (11 cm dia) to avoid crowding. Data were taken on the larval mortality, larval duration and final larval weight for all tested food media. Statistical Analysis: The experimental data were analyzed by the computer using one factor completely Randomized Design (CRD) and treatment relationships were determined using DMRT Test.

Considering all the parameters for the development of rice meal moth, the following order of food medium can be suggested as wheat flour> mixture of rice & wheat flour> rice flour> mixture of wheat & maize flour> mixture of rice & maize flour> maize flour. The present results revealed that wheat flour could be used as best food for the development C. cephalonica in laboratory condition.
