Conservation of Traditional Storage Structures by Improving the Existing Structures in Rural Areas of Mymensingh District.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Traditional storage system needs to be improved by development of existing traditional structures for sale storage of rice seed. Thus some of the doles were improved by lining with soil, cow dung and cement. Rice seeds (Pajam) were stored in the doles in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The study was done in four replication-two in the laboratory and two in the rural house in Bhaluka. The performances of the storage structures were studied by evaluating the germination efficiency of the stored rice. Rice was sun dried after collecting from the storage structures and then kept wetting in earthen pots separately for several days for germination as done by the farmers. Thus rice seed was sown in nursery bed at season from two sets of stored rice which was followed by transplanting of the seedlings in the rice field. Proper care was taken in each individual plot. After harvesting the production of trice was measured. The performance of the storage structures was evaluated on the basis of yield. It was observed that cement lined dole performs best among the structures while the bared dole performs satisfactory both in yield and germination. It can be concluded that structures remain totally anaerobic condition i.e. well protected from environment is safe for storing rice seed. On the other hand, good aerobic condition also safe stored rice from any damage. Cement lined dole will protect rice from insets and rodent attack also. From the above outputs, two types of structures were suggested for the safe storage of rice seed: Ferrocement Storage Bin and Open Air Bamboo Dole. Further studies can be done with this type of structures.

Objectives:

1) Survey of the traditional storage structures 2) Quantify the factors affecting the structures 3) Development of existing traditional structures for safe storage.

Methodology:

1) Material: Woven bamboo splits container, soil, cement, ash, cow-dung etc. 2) Design of experiments: Woven bamboo splits storage structures is of circular shaped with 100 cm dia, capable of storing 375 kg will be constructed in the laboratory and it will be improved by using soil-cement, soil-ash and soil-cowdung mixture. 3) Procedure to be followed in achieving stated objectives: A questionnaire will be given to the farmers to know the type, merits and demerits of traditional storage structures and some suggestions will be collected from the farmers to satisfy their storing requirements. Survey works on traditional storage structures will be completed within two months in more than two selected thanas of Mymensingh district. The main experimental works will be started from the 4th month and will be continued till 10th month of the project life. Preparation of report will start from the month to the end of the planned project life of one year.
