Rice Farming Systems Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Gazipur-1701.

Non availability of green manuring crop seed has been reported to be one of the main constraints of low adoption of green manuring practices at the farm level. With this end in view, a field trial was designed at the BRRI experimental farm, Gazipur to intercrop Sesbania rostrata stem with T. Aman,(BR22) having different sesbania poupulation, Activity included,20%, 30%, 40% and 50% of the soil (1,25,000 stems/ha) for sesbania seed production without affecting the rice yield. With the increase of sesbania population rice yield  gradually declined and sesbania seed and biomass yield increased. Inter cropping  of sesbania with rice at either 30% or 40% of the sole sesbania population in a 3:1 rice: sesbania row ratio was found suitable to produce sesbania seed without affecting the economic yield of rice. Moreover, this  inter cropping  yielded additional sesbania biomass which could be utilized as fuel.

To intercrop Sesbania with the transplanted Aman rice for Sesbania seed production without affecting the rice yield.

A field experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of the Bangladesh Rice Search Institute, Gazipur in the T. Aman season of 1994. The soil of the experimental field was silty clay loam with pH 5.2. organic carbon 0.9%. CEC 13.1me/100g, total N 0.09%. C/N ratio 10 exchangeable K 0.17 me/100g, and available P (Olsen P) 32 ppm. The experimental field was well prepared and leveled. Forty day-old BR 22 seedlings and 40 cm long pencil diameter Sesbania rostrata stem collected from the middle portion of sesbania plant were grown as sole and intercropped on September 9,1994. The experiment consisted of six treatments : i) sole BR 22 transplanted at 20cm x 20 cm sacing, and ii) sole sesbania having 1.25.000 stems/ha transplanted at 40cm x 20cm spacing, and iii) 20% of the sale sesbania iV) 30% of the sole sesbania V) 40% of the sesbania and Vi) 50% of the sole sesbania population interplanted with BR 22 at 3:1 rice sesbania additive row ratios. The experimental plots were fertilized with recommended doses of N, P205, K20 and S at the rates of 60, 40, 40 and 15 kg/ha, respectively. All fertilizers except N Were applied basally during final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied in three equal splits, 15 days after transplanting, at the maximum tiIIering, and panicle initiation stages. No fertilizers were applied to sole sesbania crop. Intercultural operations were done as and when required. After maximum tillering and at flowering and dough stages the crop Was irrigated. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 6m x 4m. For agronomic productivity analysis. BR 22 and sesbania were harvested at maturity. Rice grain, rice straw yield, yield attributes of rice, sesbania seed and sesbania biomass yields were recorded from a sampling area of 5m2 from each plot. Grain yield of rice was adjusted at 14% moisture content. Rice straw yield recorded at constant dry weight. The collected data were statistically analyzed and means were compared by DMRT. Rice Equivalent Yield (REY) and Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) were calculated by the following formula given by Singh et al, 1993 and Willey, 1979, respectively.

REY of the crop= (Yield of the crop (kg/ha) x Market price of the crop (Tk/kg)/ Market price of rice (Tk/kg))

LER = YA/SA +  YB/SB

Where, YA and YB are the intercrop yields of crop a and crop b, and SA and SB are the corresponding sole crop Yield. For computing REY, rough rice price of Tk. 7/kg, rice straw price of Tk.0.75/kg, sesbania biomass price of Tk. 1.50/kg, and sesbania seed price of Tk.10/kg were considered. Calculated LER was based on REY values derived from different yields of both the crops. During crop growth period, September 9 to December 30, rainfall was always less than evaporation causing severe moisture stress to rice and sesbania plants. During stress period, the crops were given three supplementary irrigation.

Sesbania at either 30% or 40% of the sole sesbania population could be inter cropped with BR 22 in the T.Aman season. This combination did not affect rice yield, but could produce additional sesbania seed to be used in the rice-based cropping system.
