Impact of Longterm Irrigation on the Chemical Properties of Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was conducted to find out the impact of long term irrigation on soil chemical properties ot Meherpur district. The irrigated and adjacent non-irrigated soil samples from sixteen selected locations were collected tor analysis. The analysis Included p^H, EC, organic carbon, total nitrogen, Ca, Mg, Na, K, P, B, Zn, Fe, Cu and Mn. The soils were alkaline in nature p^H and EC increased due to prolonged irrigation. Data generated out of chemical analysis indicated that the concentrations of Ca, Mg, Na, K, 5, P, B and Zn rn the irrigated soils increased significantly (p = 0.01 and 0.05). Organic carbon, total nitrogen, Fe, Cu, Mn, exhibited Little or no effect due to irrigation.

Objectives:

To find out the impact of long term irrigation on the chemical properties of soil.

Methodology:

Sixteen soil samples (0-15cm depth) were collected in polythene bags from irrigated and 16 samples from adjacent non-irrigated areas of Sadar Thana of Meherpur district. The samples were collected following the instructions outlined by Philippines Council for Agricultural and Resources Research. The samples were carried to the laboratory of Agricultural Chemistry, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh for analyses. The pH and electrical conductance were determines respectively using a corning glass electrode pH meter and a conductivity bridge: boron was determined calorimetrically using curcumin-oxalic acid; organic carbon through titrimetrically using Walkley and Black method with oxidation of organic matter with potassium dichromate. Total nitrogen was determine by the modified- kjeldahl method. Calcium and magnesium was determined by complexometric titration using Na₂-EDTA as titrant; sodium and potassium through flame photometer. Phosphorus was determined colorimetrically using sncl₂ as a reductant. Sulphur was estimated turbidimetrically through the procedure outlined by wolf (1982). Zinc, iron, copper and manganese were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer in the divisional laboratory of soil science, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh. The paired t-test comparison between chemical characteristics of irrigated and non-irrigated soils were completed.

Achievement/Findings:

The pH values of irrigated soils varied from 7.3 to 8.1 and that of non-irrigated soil from 7.2 to 7.8, indicating slight alkaline reaction. In most cases pH increased due to irrigation. Calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium accumulated in most of the irrigated soils. The average value of electrical conductance of irrigated soils was higher (719.00 uScm^-1) than that of non-irrigated soils (652.81 uScm^-1) due to irrigation. The mean value of organic carbon of irrigated soils (1.44%1 and non-irrigated soils (1.42 %) and the average value of total nitrogen content of irrigated soils (0.27 %) and non- irrigated soils (0.26%) revealed that long term irrigation had no significant effect on the organic carbons and total nitrogen contents of the soils. The calcium and magnesium contents in irrigated and respective non-irrigated soils indicated that irrigation significantly increased the calcium and magnesium concentration in irrigated soils. The presence of higher amount of those elements in irrigation water might have contributed to such soil conditions.The concentration of sodium, potassium and sulphur in most of the irrigated and respective non-Irrigated soils clearly indicated that irrigated farming increased these nutrients In soil. Soil submergence and concentration of Na, K and S in irrigation water may be responsible for this result.
