Effect of Plant Extracts and Time of Application on Incidence of Anthracnose, Yield and Quality of Mango

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out for controlling mango antharcnose and achieving higher yield and quality of mango cv. Amrapali at the Germplasm Centre of the Fruit Tree Improvement Project (GPC-FTIP), Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from July 2002 to July 2003. The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect the time of application and different plant extract on incidence of anthracnose, yield and quality of mango. The highest (5.30 t/ha) yield was found from thrice application and the lowest (2.86 t/ha) was found from control. The highest (30) number of healthy fruits and yield (6.44 t/ha) was found from Dithane M-45 and the lowest (13) numbers of healthy fruits and yield (2.28 t/ha) were found from control. The second highest (28) number of healthy fruits and yield (5.59 t/ha) were found from garlic extract.

Objectives:

To find out a suitable plant extract with application times for controlling mango anthracnose
To increase the yield and quality mango per unit area of land and to reduce the cost of production of quality mango

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Germplasm Centre (GPC), FTIP, Department of Horticulture, BAU, Mymensingh during July 2002 - July 2003. The two-factor experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The treatments were Garlic extract (T₁), Bishkatali extract (T₂) Lantana extract (T₃), Dholkalmi extract (T₄), Lime extract (T₅), Nishindha extract (T₆), Neem extract (T₇), Mixture (Neem + Nishindha+ Garlic + Chili) (T8), Dithane M- 45 (T₉) and Control (T₁₀) and plant were sprayed in three times viz. Before emergence of inflorescence (B₁), Before emergence of inflorescence + After emergence of inflorescence (B₂), Before emergence of inflorescence + After emergence of inflorescence + After fruit set (B₃). The plants were irrigated, weeded and fertilized regularly (as recommended in fertilizer recommendation guid as and when necessary following a uniform and recommended dose. The variety was Amrapali and spacing was 2.5 m x 2.5 m. The recorded parameters were fruit retention per inflorescence and per plant (%); total number of healthy fruits per inflorescence and per plant (%); total number of diseased fruits per inflorescence and per plant (%); total number of diseased fruits per inflorescence and per plant (%); disease incidence (%); % surface area infected per fruit; fruit weight (g); Fruit size (cm) Yield/plant; yield (t/ha) and total Soluble Solids (TSS). The benefit-cost ratio (BCR) analysis was calculated. Preparation of plant extracts Samples of different plant parts (leaf, flower and stem) of different plant species were collected from different places around BAU campus. Ten gram (10 g) of each sample was taken in an electric blender and 100 ml distilled water was added. The concentration was (1:10). The content was macerated and a suspension prepared. The suspension was filtered through cheese cloth. The clean suspension filtrate at the bottom was used as spray suspension. The name of the different plant parts are Garlic (Alliun sativum), Bishkatali (Polygonum hydropiper), Neem (Azadirachta indica) and Pithraj (Azadirachta richordiana). The suspension of different plant extracts was sprayed individually by hand sprayer. First spray was done before emergence, second spray after emergence and third was done after fruit set. All exposed surface of the plants including leaves, buds, twigs, flowers, fruits and branches were sprayed. Control plants were sprayed with water. Recorded data were analyzed statistically.
