Tomato spotted wilt virus ( TSWV) is one of the major viral diseases of which causes severe yield loss. The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the incidence of the virus and the effect left by TSWV infection on plant growth and yield contributing characters of sixteen tomato lines under field condition to screen promising lines for farmers’ field in Bangladesh. The study was conducted during October 2009 to March 2010 at the Research and Development farm of Energy Pac Agro. Limited, Gazipur. Incidence of TSWV varied from 8 .00% to 13 .00% depending on tomato varieties. The highest incidence was found in variety BARI Tomato- 2 and the lowest in Salamat. There was a significant proportion of reduction in different growth and yield contributing characters of tomato lines which ranged from 0.59 % to 70%. In regards of yield loss among the lines Abhiruchi - 10, Abhiruchi - 6, Bankim and Salamat were less affected lines. On the other hand Abhiruchi -11, Raksha, Gautam and Tropic green were much affected lines.

To find out the incidence and effect of TSWV infection on growth and yield contributing characters of sixteen tomato varieties.

The experiment was conducted in the Research and Development farm of Energy Pac Agro Limited, Gazipur. A total 16 tomato lines namely Abhiruchi-6, Abhiruchi-10, Abhiruchi-11, Bankim, Chuanchu, Diamond, Gautum, Mongal, BARI Tomato-2, BARI Tomato-3, BARI Tomato-9, Raksha, Salamat, Tropic green, Udayan and Winner were tested in the present investigation. The experiment was laid out following randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications and Sixteen tomato lines were taken as treatment s of the experiment . Seeds were sown in the nursery bed at 15th October and transplanted at 9th November in 2009. Seedlings of each variety were raised in a well- drained open nursery bed. The main field was prepared following standard method and recommended doses of manure and fertilizers were applied. After final land privation the field was divided into 48 equal plots (3 m x 2 m) maintaining plot to plot distance of 0.5 m and block to block distance of 1.0 m. Twenty five days old and apparently healthy seedlings were planted maintaining 70 cm and 0.5 m plant to plant distances. The plants of all varieties were checked every day in the morning between 9:00 - 110:00 is to record incidence of TSWV. Occurrence of TSWV infected plants were identified based on visible symptoms of the disease. Data on incidence of the disease was collected from seedling stage to harvesting stage. The incidence of TSWV was expressed in percentage which was calculated on the basis of the formula shown below: % infected plants = (number of infected plants/Total number of plants) X 100

Ten plants were randomly selected from each unit plot and samples of healthy and infected leaves were collected from those plants to determine chlorophyll content. Chlorophyll content of was determined using SPAD machine (Minolta Model - 502). At harvesting stage, data on plant growth and yield contributing characters were recorded. After final harvest, fruit yield was also recorded. All parameters of healthy and infected plants of each variety were collected and percent reduction over control (healthy plants) was computed using the following the formula:

% Reduction = (A-Ai/A) X100, where A= any parameter of healthy plant, Ai = any parameter of infected plants. Collected data were analyzed statistically using MSTATC software.

There was significant reduction due to TSWV incidence in all the parameter of the sixteen tomato varieties. Considering growth and yield contributing characters as well as the yield of sixteen tomato lines, Abhiruchi-6, Abhiruchi-10, Bankim and hybrid Salamat were less affected. Therefore, among tomato lines these may be considered as promising lines for cultivation in farmer’s field. Further investigation may be suggested for the conformation of the findings of present study.
