Combined Effect of Nitrogen and Naa on Morphological Characters of Sesame (sesamum Indicum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was undertaken in the Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during April to July 2013 to examine the response of different levels of nitrogen and foliar application of 1-napthaleneacitic acid (NAA) on morphology variety BARI Til 4. The experiment was laid out in two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The total treatment combinations were 12 (3x4). Results of the experiment showed a significant variation among the treatments in respect of the majority of the observed parameters. The N significantly increased morphological characters - plant height, number of leaves plant^-1, fresh and dry weight of shoot and root; As N, NAA also stimulated the all morphological characters except leaf and branch number plant^-1 of sesame. The interaction between different levels of N and NAA was significantly influenced on almost all morphological parameters and yield contributing characters and seed yield of sesame. Separately, the leaf and branch number plant^-1 of sesame did not show any significant difference with combined use of N and NAA. Based on the present results, it can be suggested that the combined use of 60 kg N/ha with 50 ppm NAA have increased plant morphological parameters of sesame.

Objectives:

To examine the response of different levels of nitrogen and foliar application of 1-napthaleneacitic acid (NAA) on morphology variety BARI Til 4

Methodology:

The experiment was undertaken during Kharif 1 season, April 2013 to July 2013 to examine the response to different levels of nitrogen (N) and 1-napthaleneacetic acid (NAA) on morphology, yield and yield attributes of sesame variety BARI Til 4. The experiment was carried out at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh. The experiment consisted of 12 treatment combinations and was laid out Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. It is located at 90⁰22′ E longitude and 23°4l′ N latitude at an altitude of 8.6 meters above the sea level. The land belongs to Agroecological zone of Modhupur Tract, AEZ-28. The soil was sandy loam in texture with pH 5.47 - 5.63. Treatment: Factor A: 3 levels of N (kg/ha) N₀ = 0 kg N/ha, N₁ = 60 kg N/ha and N₂ = 120 kg N/ha and Factor B: 4 level of NAA(ppm): A₀ = 0 ppm NAA, A₁ = 25 ppm NAA, A2 = 50 ppm NAA and A₃= 75 ppm NAA. The data obtained from the experiment were subjected to statistical analysis following analysis of variance technique. The mean differences were tested through, least significant difference (LSD) method.

Achievement/Findings:

Morphological parameters, seed yield and yield contributing parameters of sesame morphological parameters of sesame are positively correlated with N and NAA application. Therefore, the present experimental results suggest that the combined use of 60 kg N/ha and 50 ppm NAA along with recommended doses of other fertilizer would be beneficial to increase the seed yield of sesame variety BARI Til 4
