Growth and Yield Performance of Strawberry Germplasm at Sher-e-bangla Agricultural University

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from October, 2010 to April, 2011 to evaluate growth and yield performance of three strawberry germplasms. The experiment consisted of three germplasms viz. SG-1, RABI-3 and SG-3. Results showed that the tallest plant (28.0 cm), maximum number of leaves (11.0 plant^-1) and maximum leaf area 69.8 cm2 plant-1) was recorded from SG-1. Maximum number of fruits (26.0 plant^-1), average fruit weight (14.6 g) and maximum yield (379.8 g plant^-1) was also found in SG-1 whereas the minimum values each of the above said variables were recorded in RABI-3. Brix percentage was also found higher in SG-1 germplasm.

Objectives:

To evaluate growth and yield performance of three strawberry germplasms

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in pot culture at the Horticulture Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from October, 2010 to April, 2011. The experiment consisted of three different germplasms (SG-1, RABI-3, SG-3). Loamy soils were used for pot preparation. Soil and cow dung were mixed and pots were filled 7 days before transplanting on early October 2010. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Each variety was replicated 5 times and as such the experiment comprised 15 pots. The size of the each pot was 25 cm (10 inches) in diameter and 20 cm (8 inches) in height. Seedlings were transplanted in such a way that the crown does not go much under the soil or remain in shallow. Data on plant height, number of leaves plant^-1, leaf area and number of stolons plant^-1 were collected at 38, 45, 52, 59, 66, and 73 days after transplanting (DAT). Physiological data such as number of flowers plant-1, days to flowering and days to maturity were taken on appropriate times. Data on reproductive parameters were taken on number of fruits plant^-1, fruit length, fruit diameter, individual fruit weight and fruit yield plant^-1. Fruit quality was also monitored determining brix% of the fruit and statistically analyzed using MSTAT-C software. Means for all the treatments were calculated and the analyses of variance for each of the characters were performed by F-test. Differences between treatments were evaluated by Duncan’s Multiple Range (DMRT) test.

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded that the fruits number, fruit weight, fruit length, and diameter of fruit were found to be maximum in the germplasm SG-1 although the maximum number flower was found in SG-3.
