Development of Ferrocement Technology for General Purpose and Farm Uses.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present research is an attempt to familiarize ferrocement technology for the construction of low-cost structures both for general purpose and farm uses. The selected structures that have been identified for general purpose use are storage structures, garden and outdoor furniture, sunshade and manhole cover. Structures like irrigation/ drainage canal linings and cattle through have been marketed for farm uses. Utilizing locally available materials, the design and fabrication of the structures have been made using simple techniques. The cost of construction of ferrocement structures has been estimated on the basis of present cost of materials and labour. It is expected that the observations made in this project will bring new idea in gaining wide acceptance of this technology for the construction of low-cost structures for general purpose and farm uses.

Objectives:

1) To identify structures that can be made with ferrocement technology both for general purpose and farm uses. 2) To develop techniques in designing the ferrocement structures using traditional and non-traditional materials. 3) Fabrication of some selected structures like irrigation canal lining, food processing equipment e.g. storage and fermentation vats, cattle and sewage troughs, manhole cover, sun screen/shade, permanent form-work and garden and outdoor furniture as general purpose use.

Methodology:

1) Material: The basic materials needed for ferrocement construction are ordinary portland cement, sand, wire mesh and mild steel rod as skeletal reinforcement. 2) Design of experiment: The construction of ferrocement does not require extensive design procedure like that of traditional reinforced cement concrete. After fabrication of skeletal frame of desired size and shape, wire meshes of various numbers of layers will be placed and then plastering operation will be done. 3) Procedure to be followed in achieving stated objectives: a) Items commonly used for household, farm and for community uses will be identified that can be made with ferrocement. b) Considering strength and durability, design of structures will be made both manually and with the help of computer following the existing code and with modified standards. c) Fabrication of selected structures will be done after which performance evaluation will be made of the structures depending upon time available in the course of research work.
