Development of Three-way and Double Crosses in Brassica Rapa

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four parental lines were used in the crossing program. 67% crosses were succeessfull to produce siliquae and seed. F₁ generation of single cross combinations were also advancing for F₂ generation where 60% crosses were successful to produce siliquae.

Objectives:

To create genetic variability and accumulate favorable genes from several parents into a single cross.

Methodology:

Two single cross (BARI Sarisha 14 x BARI Sarisha 6) and (BARI Sharisha 15 x Sonali Sarisha) were crossed with Tori- 7 for three way cross. Another two single cross (Tori-7 x BARI Sarisha 9) and (BARI Sarisha 12 x Kalynia) were used to achieve double cross seed. The seeds of different parental lines of the experiment were sown two times on 18 November and 25 November 2013 to synchronize the flowering for hybridization. In the 1st sowing of the experiment, the entries flowered on 16 December 2013 to 1 January 2014. In the 2nd sowing, the entries flowered on 25 December 2013 to 1 January 2014. The hybridization have been made with the following cross combinations, [(BARI Sarisha 14 x BARI Sarisha 6) x Tori- 7], [(BARI Sharisha 15 x Sonali Sarisha) x Tori 7] and [(Tori-7 x BARI Sarisha 9) x (BARI Sarisha 12, x Kalynia)]. Simultaneously single cross were advancing through bud crossing for F₂ generation. Inter cultural operations were done when necessary. Hybridization was started on 31 December 2013.

Achievement/Findings:

A total of 1989 buds were crossed from which 1337 siliquae are developed and 11676 seeds were produced. About 67% crosses were succeeded to produce siliquae and seed. F₁ seeds were stored for advancing different generations to collect desirable genotypes in future. F₁generation of single cross combinations were also advancing for F₂ generation through bud crossing. About 60% crosses were successful in bud crosses to produce siliquae.
