A study was conducted following 5×5 North Carolina matting design II where inbred lines P622/S4-39, PCB/S3-33 and PCB/S3-34 had good general combining ability for yield and other yield contributing and quality traits of pop corn. Considering high mean value for grain yield along with quality and other yield contributing characters three crosses P622/S4-14×PCB/S3-34, P622/S4-37×PCB/S3-40 and P622/S4-39×PCB/S3-34 were selected for multilocation trials for development a commercial hybrids.

The present study involving North Carolina matting design II analysis aimed to determine the general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) of crosses for different traits and to explore heterotic hybrid combinations.

The experimental material was composed of ten phenotypically dwarf lines of S3 and S4 generation  of Pop P622 and Pop corn Burst (PCB). The selected parents were crossed following a 5 × 5 North Carolina matting design II (Comstock and Robinson, 1952) during the rabi season in 2013-14. The parents and F1 crosses were evaluated in alpha lattice design with two replications during growing season in 2014-15 at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur. Each entry was sown in single row of four meter length with a spacing of 60 cm between rows and 20 cm between the plants. The data on five quantitative characters namely, plant height (cm), ear height (cm), ear length (cm), number of grains per ear and 1000 grains weight (g) were recorded on ten randomly selected competitive plants in each replication. Days to 50 per cent tasseling, days to 50 per cent silking, yield and root lodging were recorded on plot basis, which was then and finally converted to ton/ha. After harvesting and proper drying, the dried popcorns were tested for quality by popping. Qualitative characters like popping % and popping expansion was recorded. After popping the popped kernels were tasted by 14 evaluators (Scientists and staffs) for scoring the taste of quality following 1-5 scale. During scoring the best one was scored 1 and the worst one was scored 5. Gene action was calculated by using Comstock and Robinson (1952) technique.

It is revealed that genotypes exhibited highly significant differences among themselves for all the traits studied. The parents exhibited significant differences for all the traits except number of grains/ear, indicating greater diversity in the parental lines. The crosses exhibited significant differences except 1000-grain weight, indicating varying performance of cross combinations. The parents vs. crosses which indicates average heterosis, was also significant for all traits except popping percentage and popping expansion, thus considerable amount of average heterosis was reflected in hybrids. When the effects of crosses partitioned into females, males and female × male effects, the interaction effects (female × male) were found to be significant for all the traits except 1000-grain weight under study indicating that hybrids differed significantly in their sca effects. A comparison of the magnitude of variance components due to gca and sca confirms the gene action in controlling the expression of traits. The ratio of GCA and SCA variance for all the traits under study was less than one which indicates that all these characters were predominantly governed by non-additive gene effects. The proportional contribution of female was much higher than male and interaction for ear height, indicating the predominant maternal influence. The relative contribution of female × male interaction was more important for all the traits except ear height. The higher contribution of interactions of the female × male than male and female, indicating higher estimates of variances due to non-additive genetic effects and the importance of specific combining ability.

This study revealed that desirable good general combining ability effects of pop corn for yield and it’s contributing characters and quality were noticed in the inbred lines P622/S4-14, P622/S4-39, PCB/S3-33 and PCB/S3-34. These parents had resulted in the production of superior single crosses. Hence, these inbred lines have the potential application in the crop improvement program. Considering high mean value for grain yield along with quality and other yield contributing characters three crosses viz. P622/S4-14×PCB/S3-34, P622/S4-39×PCB/S3-34 and P622/S4-37×PCB/S3-40 were high yielded
