Evaluation of Custard Apple Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The growth parameters of 15 custard apple germplasm which were planted during June, 2009 in the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur were studied during the year 2013. Wide range of variation was observed in plant height, base girth, canopy spread in E-W an N-S orientation, number of branch, number of and fruit. Maximum plant height was observed in AS Joy-014 (4.10 m) and minimum in AS Joy-005 (2.90 m). Maximum base girth was found to be 26.80 cm in AS Joy-014 and minimum (15.65 cm) in AS Joy-001. Plant spread in the N-S orientation was observed maximum in AS Joy 004 (3.20 m) and minimum in AS Joy-003 (1.10 m). On the other hand, plant spread in the E-W orientation was found maximum in AS Joy -014 (3.10 m) and minimum in AS Joy-012 (1.60 m). Harvesting period of fruit lasted from August to October, 2013. The weight of fruit differed from 114 g to 245 g. Maximum and minimum edible portion were found 58.5 and 28.1%, respectively. The number of fruit varied from 7 to 63 and TSS from 17.0 to 26.0^oBrix.

Objectives:

To develop superior variety (ies) of custard apple through the process of selection.

Methodology:

The experiment was initiated during the year of 2007-08. With the view of selection of superior custard apple germplasm, 32 different types of fruit were procured from different markets of Gazipur and Dhaka. Fruit characteristics were analyzed in the laboratory of pomology division. Primarily, 15 superior germplasm were identified and seedlings were raised from those collected custard apple germplasm. Then seedlings of 15 germplasm were planted in the field of Fruit Research Farm in 2009. The planting space was maintained at 4 x 4 m. The experiment was non replicated. The plants were fertilized with recommended dose and application method was maintained accordingly. Intercultural operations like irrigation, drainage, weeding and plant protection measures were done as and when necessary. Data on plant and fruit characteristics were recorded during the period of August to October, 2013.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on quality, pink coloured and bigger fruit size, germplasm AS Joy-015 could be proposed for variety. The germplasm AS Joy-004 and AS Joy-005 having green coloured fruits are also better in respect of number of fruit and other quality were also proposed for variety.
